West Midlands LGA is an important regional centre for collaboration and the promotion of co-ordination of knowledge sharing, views and experience. It is
• an influential force – as the regional voice of local government, West Midlands LGA works to represent the collective views of its constituent authorities to other regional institutions, the UK Government and EU institutions on policy issues;
• a partnership mechanism through which local authorities can work together and with other organisations on a regional basis, where such collaboration is either essential or highly beneficial and supports the improvement of public services;
• a provider of ‘value added’ services - to support people and organisational improvement, particularly in the areas of corporate consultancy, intelligence gathering and information sharing promotion of best practice, training and development services.
The work undertaken by employees at West Midlands LGA is varied dependent on issues arising through government, and the support required by the constituent authorities. Due to this, in addition to permanent posts, fixed term or secondment opportunities often arise to deal with the ever-changing needs of the organisation.
The culture of West Midlands LGA is very much that employees are encouraged to be part of decision-making processes; to develop increased responsibility; to build on their knowledge and skills; and to progress their career. Due to West Midlands LGA working closely with all of the region’s 38 Local Authorities the knowledge which can be gained from working for the organisation is vast. For example, learning about the way in which the region’s authorities operate, networking with many of their officers, understanding government (locally, regionally and nationally), working with other public sector bodies or private sector organisations.
