Learning and development
You’ll benefit from a diverse range of learning and development opportunities at every stage of your career including:
Induction Programme - We offer a comprehensive corporate induction programme to provide support and help in the early days of employment whilst you’re ‘finding your feet’. We’ll also provide you with a mentor or ‘buddy’ to help you settle in and offer on-the-job advice about the practicalities of your role. Your Line Manager will play an active part in your induction and will review your role and targets on a 6 monthly basis.
Corporate Training Courses - These range from Assertiveness, Time Management and Project Management courses to people management courses covering managing discipline/grievance or recruitment and selection.
Registration of Professional Qualifications - We recognise that some roles require our employees to be registered with a national professional body and agree in these circumstances to meet the annual registration costs. For example, this is applicable for the GSCC registration for all qualified Social Workers who work in our organisation.
Apprenticeships – We offer apprenticeships within our Leisure and Housing Teams for people interested in such roles as Recreation Assistant, Electricians or Plumbers/Gas Engineers.
‘Lunch-Time Learning Bites’ Learning Bites’ – Available to all employees, these learning tools are quick and easy to access. Usually provided at a choice of venues from our Learning Resource Centre in Stoke, courses include ‘Getting by in Spanish’, Yoga, Computer Skills and Gardening.
Career Progression Schemes - We run a number of schemes that allow employees to gain relative work experience whilst studying for a qualification in their chosen work area. The scheme involves such roles as Social Worker, Planning Officer, Regeneration Officer, Quantity Surveyor and Financial Technician.
Secondments & Development - Secondments are often advertised within the Council to aid career progression whilst internal development opportunities often arise, enabling our people to gain experience and grow professionally in their chosen careers.
Post Qualification Training Courses – Where appropriate to the role and available funding, your Department will support your studies both financially and in terms of your workload with study time relief. For example, Social Workers will have the opportunity of being supported to obtain the PQSW in Child Care whilst Apprentices will have the opportunity to study for NVQs.
