Harry Kingston - Paralegal at Herefordshire Council

We’ve spoken to people from across the region who are currently completing, or who have completed, an apprenticeship so you can find out more about the opportunities available.

Harry is a Paralegal in the Legal Services department at Herefordshire Council. Harry is waiting for the final result of his Level 6 Chartered Legal Executive Apprenticeship and has learnt so much.

Read on to find out more about why they chose the apprenticeship route, what they enjoyed the most and more importantly, how it can help you in your career!

Why did you choose the apprenticeship route?

When I decided on a career in law, I wanted to gain hands-on experience in the workplace whilst studying and be in a position to hit the ground running when I qualified as a lawyer.

I secured a job in the Children and Young People legal team and my manager at the time suggested that I continue my legal studies on a degree-level apprenticeship. I didn't have to be persuaded. I would not incur further student debt and would be given a study day every week. The study day has been invaluable, as the courses are demanding.

What did you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?

My highlight is graduating at Central Hall Westminster, London in October 2022 after achieving CILEX Advanced Paralegal status. It was special to celebrate years of hard work with family and friends. I’m looking forward to qualifying as a Chartered Legal Executive and returning to London for the admission ceremony.

Also, I have loved my job roles throughout the apprenticeship. I have worked in both childcare law and adult social care law. The work has been fascinating, fast-paced, challenging, varied and morally worthwhile (which is everything I wanted from a career). I feel that the work has made a difference to the lives of disadvantaged, vulnerable people in my home county, which is particularly satisfying.

How has your apprenticeship helped you in your career?

It has helped me to progress. When I started at Herefordshire Council, I was clueless! I had never worked in law, or even in an office, before. I'm now undertaking work that is wholly of a legal nature and will qualify as a Chartered Legal Executive and adult social care lawyer this year. I plan to use the apprenticeship as a platform to become a CILEX Litigator and Advocate and attain the Law Society's Mental Capacity Accreditation.
