Job Details

This role will be responsible for providing an in-house health and safety service to the West Midlands Combined Authority and its directorates with a particular focus on developing improved health and safety management systems and processes including compliance monitoring and audit. The role will support the Health and Safety Manager in the further development and delivery of a positive health and safety culture throughout the organisation.

What will you be doing? 

  • Carry out proactive monitoring, inspection and auditing of safety arrangements including safety audits and safety verification
  • Manage and maintain arrangements in respect of First Aid, fire procedures, DSE assessments and the induction of new staff
  • Assist in the effective delivery of the Health and Safety Management Plan
  • Assist in the development, management and continuous review of WMCA Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • Develop and maintain a range of communication medium to ensure that staff are kept up to date with health and safety matters
  • Administer the corporate Safety Management System (SMS) including monitoring actions 
  • Ensure Risk Assessments identify controls proportionate to the risk and are appropriately implemented to minimise future risks
  • Investigate reports of accidents, incidents and near misses, determine their causes and make recommendations for improving recurrence prevention and controls
  • Assist in the preparation of Health and Safety performance reports and associated dashboards 
  • Provide support to and attend Safety Health and Environmental (SHE) Committee meetings
  • Represent Health and Safety interests at various focus groups/work groups

About you

NEBOSH qualified, you will already have gained some experience in a health and safety role within a growing, multi-site organisation. We're looking for someone with working knowledge of current health and safety legislation and its application and who can evidence where they have provided value-add, competent advice on health and safety matters.

You'll be able to interpret health and safety legislation and prepare health and safety policies, procedures and codes of practice. In addition, you'll be able to work at pace without losing attention to detail and have good communication skills, able to engage and build strong internal and external relationships at all levels. 

About the team

Our Health & Safety team is responsible for the provision of competent advice and guidance to ensure the West Midlands Combined Authority complies with its legal obligations in relation to health and safety as it applies to the wide range of activities and undertakings of the WMCA. In particular, the team will formulate the health and safety strategy, develop safety management systems, and devise policy to satisfy legal compliance, industry practice and organisational needs.
