Be Bold, Be Birmingham

We need to be clear. There is no bigger, and no more exciting role in Place Making anywhere in the UK than the Director of Places, Prosperity & Sustainability. Our economic growth and resilience, our cultural assets, entrepreneurial spirit, creativity and location at the centre of the UK’s infrastructure means that Birmingham is central to UK in so many ways.

In the past, Birmingham has shied away from the spotlight, put up with negative connotations, stereotypes and being classed as the ‘second city’. Until Now. Now is the time for this to stop. We are a pioneering city of firsts and as our new Director you will play a leading role in our future, telling our story to the world, and leveraging our incredible physical, cultural and economic assets in ways that will create growth and opportunity that are inclusive and sustainable.

Birmingham is Bold, the definition of which is a willingness to take risks; confident and courageous. We need you to be the same. The social and economic impact of Covid19 on Birmingham means that you will be joining the council at a critical but also exciting time and one of re-charge and renewal.

The Commonwealth Games 2022 means the eyes of the World will be on Birmingham and will be our chance to shine on a global stage. As our Director you will play an important and central role in ensuring that the games deliver a lasting legacy.

For professionals with a passion for inclusive place making, then Birmingham offers an unrivalled opportunity, of a scale and complexity, unlike any other UK City. It means delivering homes, jobs and opportunities for every community and every neighbourhood, and includes working collaboratively with partners from grassroots up to Government, to ensure that no Birmingham citizen is left behind, and we contribute to and influence national levelling up ambitions. And of course, this includes responding to the climate emergency as we build a greener and healthier Birmingham.

A member of the Councils future Executive Management team working corporately and collaboratively, you will join Birmingham at a critical time, just as we are launching our ‘Big City Plan’ investment scheme, a 20-year masterplan designed to revolutionise the city centre, covering 1.5 million square metres of new floorspace, 50,000 new jobs and a potential £2.1 billion for our region’s economy annually.

Then there’s the arrival of HS2 - a project to rebalance the UK economy and infrastructure, that is already creating jobs and opportunities in Birmingham.

As our new Director we want you to use your talents and experience to promote Birmingham, nationally and internationally as a global city attractive; to investors and a dynamic city where people want to live, visit and do business.

We require a Director with a strong commercial acumen who understands how to assemble and leverage strategic assets in a way that allows the council to optimise development opportunities, ensuring that the council makes the most of its resources and infrastructure.

Above all, you will have a passion for creating and sustaining an inclusive economy, using your leadership and technical skills to lead, develop and inspire your people, to deliver the best outcomes for all our residents and communities

We are keen to attract the best talent from the public and private sectors, and the City Council is absolutely committed to having a workforce that reflects the diverse local community it serves.

The Council is a fantastic place to work. You will find an organisation that is both challenging and supportive; with a leadership impatiently adventurous in its pursuit of excellence.

There is a clear vision which is ensuring that the Council is working for communities today and building for tomorrow, we focus our resources on five key priorities:

  • A Prosperous Birmingham: through a focus on inclusive economic growth, tackling unemployment, attracting inward investment, and maximising the benefits of the Commonwealth Games.
  • An Inclusive Birmingham: through a focus on tackling poverty and inequality, empowering citizens, promoting diversity and civic pride, and supporting and enabling all children and young people to thrive.
  • A Safe Birmingham: through a focus on making the city safer, safeguarding vulnerable citizens, increasing affordable housing, and tackling homelessness.
  • A Healthy Birmingham: through a focus on tackling health inequalities, encouraging physical activity and healthy living, supporting mental health, and improving outcomes for adults with disabilities and older people.
  • A Green Birmingham: through a focus on street cleanliness, improving air quality, continuing the route to net zero, and becoming a city of nature.

We see the Council’s role as providing strategic leadership – that’s being able to visualise a new future for the city and equipping others to share our vision. We want to ensure the provision of services for all, so we can support those least able to support themselves by working with partners and putting citizens and neighbourhoods at the heart of our decision-making.

We are always looking for people who put the customer at the centre of their approach, with a commitment to excellence to help us achieve our vision.  We will support you to develop and thrive in your role, building a pathway for long-term success, with lots of development opportunities, such as apprenticeships.

In return, we offer you excellent terms and conditions, generous annual leave, a great pension scheme, well-being support, annual travel passes and discounts at a number of city centre establishments.
