Job Details

Fleet Management is a key support service for many internal and external customers at Coventry City Council.  We are based in a fully equipped vehicle workshop at our Whitley Depot site and are responsible for the repair and maintenance of approximately 500 items including vehicles and plant machinery and equipment. We are also responsible for the provision of fuel to our customers, and in addition provide a driver training service to many customers.

What is the job role?

We are looking to appoint a self-motivated individual who can work well in a team and is prepared to learn and work on a wide range of local authority vehicles and plant.

You will learn all aspects of vehicle maintenance including experience on light and heavy commercial vehicles as well as a varied range of plant and equipment. This will include vehicle safety inspections, servicing, electrical diagnosis and repair, general fault diagnosis, hydraulic systems, and basic welding and fabrication. There may also be opportunities to develop MOT testing skills (based on age and experience), and you will learn how to utilise a wide range of repair related and workshop equipment.

Our apprentices work alongside experienced staff to gain skills related to their job whilst also studying towards a Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service & Maintenance Apprenticeship.

Joining our Fleet Management Service as an Apprentice Vehicle Technician is a great opportunity to start a career with the Council.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for applicants that have:

  • A basic understanding of mechanical components.
  • A basic understanding of workplace health and safety related issues
  • Problem solving and data recording skills.
  • An interest in starting a career in vehicle maintenance
