The Coventry Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) Support Service exists to deliver the aspirational challenge set to us by young people with SEND and their families: ‘To Lift the Cloud of Limitation and enable them to enjoy an ordinary life’. 

We are a creative, connected and forward-thinking service.  Together with our families and partners in schools, settings, the NHS and third sector, we have driven change that has pushed us to the cutting edge of SEND.  This includes embedding co-production across all areas of service delivery, investing in our SEND workforce, and pioneering new initiatives such as the award-nominated 'Together We Can' partnership group to engage Early Years children and their families and 'My Support Plan', a family-centred approach to understanding children's strengths and needs and tailoring their support. 

When Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) completed a Local Area inspection of Coventry in October 2019, they commended our “genuine passion and commitment to get things right for children and young people with SEND and their families”; our respect for the “lived experiences of children and young people with SEND and their parents” and the “strong partnership between school settings and education service providers, with a high level of buy-back of specialist services”.

The Sensory Team are specialist (hearing and vision) teachers and support staff providing highly specialist support and advice for children and young people with hearing or vision difficulties in Coventry aged from 0-25. 

The team, which is highly regarded by families and schools, provides information, equipment and direct teaching in homes, early years settings and schools across Coventry to promote inclusion, empower families and raise achievement.

What is the job role?

Teacher of the Deaf in Charge of Secondary Hearing-Impaired Resource Base

0.8 FTE permanent post-TMS plus SEN 2 Allowance plus TLR 2a

Salary advertised will be prorated to number of hours worked

To start as soon as possible an experienced Qualified Teacher of the Deaf is required to join the well-respected Sensory Team in Coventry.

Job purpose

To assist with the management of the Hearing Impairment Team, by;

  • Leading and managing, on a day-to-day basis, the development of effective teaching, learning and access strategies across the curriculum, to support the educational and general progress of hearing-impaired pupils attending the Secondary Resource Base
  • Manage the HI Resource Base in partnership with the Senior Leadership Team of the school
  • Leading the work of the HI Resource Base  in enhancing the teaching practice of other staff in the mainstream school, in meeting the needs of HI pupils in their classrooms
  • To be the key lead in fostering links with FE Colleges with view to potentially creating a service for FE colleges
  • Responsibility for monitoring the transition of children with HI in Coventry to Further Education or Employment.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated Qualified Teacher of the Deaf  to join a well-established team.

You will need to be creative, imaginative and sensitive to the individual needs of hearing impaired children and young people.

You will need:

Energy and enthusiasm in working with hearing impaired children

A thorough knowledge regarding the educational implications of a hearing impairment including those with additional needs

The ability to form supportive relationships with colleagues

Willingness to take managerial initiatives, responsibilities and contribute to overall Service development

Excellent communication (written and oral) and ability to work co-operatively with others

Excellent ICT skills and ability to undertake assessment procedures, plan and facilitate delivery of appropriate programmes of educational support across phases

A successful record of recent teaching experience with hearing impaired children.

Substantial and successful experience of collaborative working in close partnership with families and contributing to multi-agency model of support
