Do you have a passion and interest in developing a career in debt recovery and business administration?  Are you willing to work towards a qualification while gaining hands on experience?

If so then we have a great opportunity for an Income Collection Apprentice to gain skills, experience and knowledge within a busy finance service whilst working towards a nationally recognised qualification.

As an Apprentice you will:

  • work alongside experienced staff
  • gain job-specific skills
  • earn a wage and get holiday pay
  • study towards a related qualification

Working in the Income Team, your main duty will be to provide support in maximising and securing income due to the Council by taking effective and timely debt recovery action. Your tasks will include telephone collections, issuing reminder letters, referral of debts to external collection agents and administering instalment arrangements. The postholder will also be required to respond to and resolve customer queries, requiring personal resilience and an understanding of the importance of confidentiality.

Our aim is to support individuals to work towards a relevant professional debt recovery qualification whilst providing an opportunity to gain the job related skills required in support of this.

The post is for a fixed term of 18 months and will be paid for 37 hours per week (which would be split between working in the office and undertaking training), in addition costs relating to the provision of the training will be met by Walsall Council.

This post is covered by the Government’s Code of Practice on the English Language Fluency Duty for public sector workers.  The postholder will be required to communicate verbally with customers and provide advice and/or information in accurate spoken English.

For this role the successful candidates must undergo a Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check.  BPSS is the minimum standard to ensure the identity and integrity of an employee who has access to official information using secure networks linking central government and local authorities.  A BPSS check involves four main elements; Identity Check, National and Immigration Status, Employment History (last 3 years) and Verification of Criminal Record (unspent convictions only).

Entry requirements:

As part of the Apprenticeship programme there may be a requirement for the Apprentice to undertake Functional Skills English and/or Maths at the appropriate level – this will be determined by previous qualifications.

There will be a short computer based exercise prior to the interview – you do not need to prepare for this and you will be given more information about this should you be short listed for interview.

Important note: as you progress through the online application form you will be asked to upload a supporting statement. Instead of uploading a supporting statement, applicants for this post are required to complete the Income Collection Apprentice job related questions as part of the online application. Please do not upload a supporting statement or your CV as these will not be accepted.
