Are you passionate about encouraging and supporting young people to overcome personal challenges and push them to become the best version of themselves? Do you have experience working with SEN children or adults, or are you a teaching assistant looking for that next challenge? Here at Peak we are currently recruiting for a resilient and driven SEN Learning Support Assistant to join our team of highly qualified teachers, based in our schools in Cannock and Gailey.

We are looking for the successful candidate to commit to full time hours during term time, typically working between 8.00am-4.30pm Mon-Fri.

Who are Peak Education?

  • We pride ourselves on delivering bespoke academic packages to SEN children and young adults.
  • As well as supporting our students to excel in basic academic lessons, we also offer an array of social enrichment learning through both creative and practical approaches such as cookery, art and music.
  • What separates us from other schools is that we also offer an array of vocational studies. We reward our students with outdoor activities, ranging from climbing walls, mountain biking and canoeing at our outdoor centres with our qualified Activity Instructors.
  • We are committed to investing in young people to enhance their skills and experiences in the classroom and outdoors.

What does the role involve?

  • Mentoring, supporting and inspiring learners and apprentices by being a positive role model.
  • Managing challenging behaviours, verbal and physical altercations on a regular basis and being able to utilise restraint techniques (full training provided).
  • Supporting progressive curriculum-based learning in the classroom and through outdoor activities.
  • Assisting with the preparation of learning material and contributing to the delivery of learning objectives with a strong focus on behavioural management.
  • Daily reports on learners’ progress and barriers to learning.
  • Interaction with parents/care givers on a regular basis.

What the successful candidate needs:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A can-do attitude and willingness to get involved both classroom and outdoor activities such as rock climbing, water sports and mountain biking.
  • Good organisation and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to prioritise work objectives alongside learner needs.
  • Be a good mentor/role model and be able to engage with learners at their level.
  • Mentally resilient, calm and patient when being faced with stressful and violent situations.
  • Previous experience working in similar challenging environments would be a distinct advantage, as would a background in youth work, teaching or complaint handling and resolution.
  • Due to the nature of the role you must hold a full clean UK driving licence.
  • A minimum if A-C in GCSE Maths, English and ICT and have certificates available.

This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity for both aspiring and experienced SEN Learning Support Assistants. In return we will provide you with CPD training opportunities such as safeguarding, MAPA (de-escalation and restraint) and first aid as well as offering the opportunity for you to engage in further academic learning through NVQ L3 teaching courses.

In return, the SEN Learning Support Assistant will receive national living wage (currently £8.91 and £1,314.19 pcm year-round) inclusive of pay in lieu of annual leave and bank holidays. You will receive CPD and training opportunities including First Aid, Safeguarding, MAPA (de-escalation and restraint), and after a successful probation, you will have the option to engage in further academic learning yourself (NVQ L3 Supporting Teaching and Learning).
