An exciting opportunity has arisen for Best Interest Assessors to join the DOLS Team. We are looking for existing or aspiring senior practitioners who can demonstrate the skills and experience to meet the demands and challenges of this rewarding specialist post. 

This opportunity is open to qualified Social Workers, Occupational Therapists or Nurses who also have a DOLS Professional qualification and a keen interest in working with staff and service users in various settings, which will include some court work.

The post holder will ensure compliance with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLs) and undertake specific assessments as part of the overall DOLs Assessment Process in line with the role of the Best Interest Assessor. You will also be responsible for communication across complex health and social care boundaries, dealing with Managing Authorities in all sectors. Applicants must have specialist knowledge of the MCA 2005 with specific reference to DOLs, MHA 2007 and be able to influence change in a health and social care environment.

Reporting directly to the MCA/DOLS Lead, core duties will include undertaking DOLS assessments and generally supporting the DOLs lead with carrying out the statutory duties in this area.  This will include ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the service including providing advice to other professionals, promoting best practice in relation to the Mental Capacity Act with practitioners across the local authority and partner agencies. 

Candidates must have an awareness of the proposed changes to the existing procedures for a Deprivation of Liberty, known as Liberty Protection Safeguards and a keen interest in becoming an Approved Mental Capacity Professional once the new legislation is implemented including supporting with and leading on the delivery of internal workshops to embed knowledge and support practice in this specialist area.

This post is covered by the Government’s Code of Practice on the English Language Fluency Duty for public sector workers.  The post holder will be required to communicate verbally with customers and provide advice and/or information in accurate spoken English.
