Grade 2 Library Assistants

All posts are fixed term contracts and are available to BCC employees as secondments.

These contracts may be extended subject to Workforce Review Board approval.

Potential vacancies

This vacancy is for a full-time post 36.5hrs at Kings Heath Library on a fixed term contract till 26th September 2022.  The successful candidate will be working 3 out of 4 Saturdays and Mondays, Tuesdays Thursdays and Fridays. 

However, Grade 2 vacancies may arise in other libraries in the near future so please submit an application if you have an interest in working in Birmingham libraries.

All interviewed candidates will be invited to nominate their preferred work locations and candidates who demonstrate their suitability may be offered a post at another library up to 6 months after the date of this advert.

There are 35 Community Libraries open across Birmingham and vacancies come up throughout the year.

The offer of a post is subject to management approval and business need. Please note that successful candidates in some instances will also be required to work at neighbouring libraries.

The Birmingham Community Library Service

The Birmingham Community Library Service is being transformed with a focus on customer needs. New services are being developed alongside reading support, book lending, information services, access to IT and community activities. Vacancies exist for people who can work flexibly and who want to make a positive contribution to this exciting period of change. In particular, we need staff who are enthusiastic about moving the service forward but who also committed to keeping themselves, colleagues and customers as safe as possible by adhering to health and safety requirements.

The hours will need to be worked on a rota basis and Saturday working is required. You will assist the Library Manager and other senior staff in the provision of an effective modern library service, including book lending, IT services and a range of other community services.

Key duties of the advertised post includes assisting customers and dealing with routine enquiries face to-face and on the telephone, enrolling new borrowers, helping customers access IT services, dealing with partner organisations, issuing and discharging books on a computerised system, supporting and delivering activities for children and adults. Other duties may include undertaking general clerical duties, minor book repairs, dealing with monies, taking fines, verifying documents for benefits claimants.

Previous experience of a customer facing role, using IT in a work environment, and an ability to categorise and sort information are key to the position.
