Job Details

The award-winning City of Wolverhampton Council is seeking an enthusiastic Project Coordinator to join our dynamic and hardworking Arts and Culture team. This 2-year fixed-term position is an ideal opportunity for an individual who is looking to advance their career and join a thriving and supportive organisation.

As the Living with Difference Project Coordinator, you will work closely with the Arts and Culture team to lead on our exciting Living With Difference project. This externally funded initiative will test new, ambitious creative collections engagement that has social impact. Living with Difference will use contemporary art and historic art collections to facilitate conversations with people from underrepresented communities about identity, home, belonging and heritage in our multicultural city. The project focuses on items in our collection of contemporary artworks by Black and Asian artists, as well as items relating to the British colonial era such as dolls, ceramics, ivories, swords and baskets reflecting different cultures. The Gallery’s collection includes many significant works by artists associated with the British BLK Art movement, including Keith Piper, Eddie Chambers, Sonia Boyce, Claudette Johnson, Lubaina Himid and Donald Rodney; Wolverhampton played a major part in establishing this important movement in the 1980s. The Gallery also holds rich collections of decorative art from India, China, Japan and other regions across the globe. The Living with Different project will start important conversations with Wolverhampton’s diverse communities to bring about a greater sense of cohesion, inclusion and understanding of one another’s cultural histories.

The Living with Difference Project Coordinator will research the Gallery’s collection, build relationships with local community groups and schools, and work closely with Wolverhampton’s Collections, Curatorial and Cultural Learning teams to develop activities and cocreated projects which bring people and collections together in meaningful ways. The role will involve managing all aspects of the project, including recruiting participants from underrepresented communities, commissioning and overseeing the work of freelance facilitators, developing project plans, organising and running workshops and events, monitoring budgets, preparing reports and working with participants to develop cocreated tangible outputs. We anticipate that some of these outputs will be in digital formats.

The ideal applicant will be highly motivated, passionate about arts and culture and committed to working with communities. You will have significant knowledge of socially engaged art practices and ideally have worked with museums and art gallery collections. Excellent communications and IT skills are essential, be well as great all-round project management abilities.

Above all, you will have a genuine commitment to developing audiences for arts and culture through engagement with collections, and to serving under represented sectors of our community.

We particularly welcome applications from people from diverse backgrounds. The City of Wolverhampton Council is committed to Equalities and Diversity in the workplace.
