Are you looking for a role right at the very heart of the regional news agenda, working with a national political figure? Do you want to be part of a progressive organisation delivering transformational change to our region? If this sounds like you, let’s speak.

Now is an exciting time to join the West Midlands Combined Authority. We've secured more than £1bn of government investment to continue our transport revolution. We’re delivering a multimillion-pound housing package and we’ve set out £25m to help the region's unemployed back into work. It doesn’t stop there. We’re making phenomenal progress as a region and are starting to see the West Midlands reclaim its rightful place as a thriving and economically successful region.

Andy Street was elected as Mayor of the West Midlands in 2017. He is chair of the West Midlands Combined Authority.

As Press Officer, you will join Andy to get the West Midlands moving in a positive direction after decades of decline. Your focus will be on supporting and promoting the Mayor’s activities through the effective management of press relations with local and national media, ensuring his agenda is reported accurately and fairly.

This role is fixed term until May 2024.

What will you be doing?

  • Manage press relations and correspondence with the local and national media
  • Act as a trusted spokesperson for Andy and ensure he is briefed before media engagements
  • Advise Andy on relevant media stories
  • Sign off quotes and content
  • Support with the delivery of social media accounts
  • Promote interest in the West Midlands activities by preparing press releases and generating interest in Andy’s agenda
  • Attend media engagements and ensure briefing materials are available

This is a politically restricted role.

About you

We’re looking for someone who is highly motivated to drive forward the region’s agenda. You’ll need a successful track record in press, PR or communications covering cultural and political matters with a West Midlands regional focus.

Knowing 'who’s who' in local media and a clear understanding of both local and national politics is needed. We’re looking for someone who understands Andy’s agenda, and key delivery plans, and who can turn policy and delivery activities into creative communications campaigns.
