36.5 hours per week across a range of shifts 24/7 365 days per year
The Library of Birmingham is an iconic and prestigious building open 6 days a week to the public and is a major tourist attraction. The Building was opened in September 2013. We sit at the heart of Birmingham's vibrant city centre and enjoy a large daily footfall of customers from 9 am to 9 pm Monday to Friday and from 11 am to 5 pm on Saturdays.
We operate a wide range of Library Services across numerous floors and public terraces. We have a Cafe and Conferencing and Gala Dinner facilities and host various events throughout the year. Within the Library sits the Brasshouse Languages School, Children’s and Music, Knowledge and Learning, Business and Archives and Heritage libraries. The Library encompasses a large specialist archives store which holds many rare documents in a specialist environment.
We are looking for 3x Security Officers on a 12-month fixed term contract basis to support us to deliver the services above safely and securely.
Security at the Library of Birmingham is a critical function for the safety and security of all building occupants;
The team of Security Officers monitor Life Safety Systems in the Control Room for both the Library of Birmingham and our neighbour The REP Theatre including Brasshouse Language school. They respond to fire/intruder alarms, lift entrapment and those relating to equipment condition.
Security Officers also play a key role front of house in supporting the delivery of library services by controlling customer access and to help provide a safe and secure environment in which to study, read books and much more on a daily basis. Security Officers also provide support for out of hours events such as Gala Dinners. The security rota operates 24/7 365 days across various shifts including earlies, lates, mornings, mid-shifts and nights protecting safety and security through that presence throughout the year
Key duties include: -
- Opening and closing the Library of Birmingham
- Investigating Fire Alarms and liaising with Emergency Services
- Operating the Fire Evacuation Lift to assist those with PEEPS and GEEPS
- Delivering First Aid where required to both staff and the public
- Deal with behavioural standards incidents as per the Public Libraries and Museum Act 1964
- Monitor CCTV systems and operate cameras and save recordings/snapshots
- Form part of the library’s counter terrorism response
- Perform bag searches if required under Government Security levels
- Undertaking daily patrols of the premises to detect any security issues
- Triaging customer entry to services arising from any COVID-19 measures such as Test and Trace
- Ability to foster relationships with Librarian colleagues to support the safe and secure delivery of services
- Security experience -preferred
- Good Customer Skills
- Good understanding of Security Policies and Procedures
- Security uniform will be provided and must be worn
Security Officers are expected to work flexibly to cover shifts as required
An ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence using the English Language as required by Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2016
