Coventry City Council is an exciting place to work – currently UK City of Culture until May 2022 and soon to be part of the Commonwealth Games 2022 the Regulatory Services team is busy helping to plan and prepare to host safe events in the City and to support local businesses in complying with a wide range of legislative requirements. We are looking to recruit an Environmental Health Officer to join the Food & Safety Team. We are seeking a positive, experienced, enthusiastic, talented and driven professional who cares about the development of our great city to join our busy, hard working, forward thinking team.​

The successful candidate will be working in our Food & Safety team which sits under the wider Planning & Regulatory Services team, made up of multi-disciplinary professionals including Licensing, Trading Standards, Food and Safety, Planning and Housing Enforcement and Property Licensing. 

The service area aims to:

  • Ensure that the public, visitors, workers and residents of Coventry have the right to a healthy and safe work and domestic environment;
  • Treat all regulated persons and businesses in a fair and consistent manner, through a process of education, persuasion and enforcement, ensuring that the public and businesses observe the law, and
  • Protect public health and the wider environment, whilst minimising disruption to enterprise or economic activity and reducing the legislative burden on compliant businesses

The Food & Safety team are responsible for administering all requirements under food and health & safety law including inspections, complaint investigations and accident investigations. We also work closely with the Safety Advisory Group to support safe events in the City.

What is the job role?

You will be working under the general direction of the Food and Safety Manager to enforce all relevant legislation administered by the department, and to educate and encourage the public and business proprietors to improve relevant standards.

This post is a 30 hour per week, fixed term contract until end of November 2022.

Main work duties will include but will not be limited to the following: 

  • Inspecting food businesses in accordance with the provisions of the Food Law Code of Practice (FLCOP).
  • Investigation of a wide range of complaints and enquiries, ensuring that all relevant legislation and guidance is being complied with.  
  • Undertaking accident investigations and taking formal action if required; including prosecution if necessary.
  • Investigating cases and outbreaks of infectious diseases.
  • Providing support to local businesses to ensure compliance with a wide range of regulations.
  • Working collaboratively with a wide range of partners.
  • Taking appropriate action under the relevant statutory provisions to ensure the department's objectives are met.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a qualified Environmental Health Practitioner who has detailed knowledge of the law relating to Environmental Health issues, investigative techniques and law of evidence. Competency in and recent experience of enforcing health and safety and food safety legislation is essential.      

You will be working as part of a busy team and managing a heavy caseload so an ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines is key.  

To apply for this role, you must possess a Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health and be EHRB registered. You must also be competent under the provisions of the FLCOP to inspect high risk food businesses and to use the full range of food safety enforcement powers open to the profession. In addition, you must be competent to enforce the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and associated Regulations. You must be competent to serve Improvement and Prohibition Notices.
