Merit is a small, local authority maintained school in Stoke on Trent for secondary school children with medical and mental health needs.  We are also responsible for providing education at The University Hospitals of North Midlands.

The school offers a safe, secure and nurturing environment with skilled and experienced teachers and supportive, wrap-around care for all our pupils.

We are seeking an outstanding Subject Lead for Maths following an internal promotion.  In this unique role, you will lead the teaching of mathematics across the school including our hospital classroom.
Why Merit?
Unlike most alternative provision, we mirror a mainstream curriculum with an academic focus and pupils studying for 7 GCSE in recognised EBacc subjects. Merit pupils go on to study at all levels, with many going on to University.

We are proud of our GCSE results which align with some of the best in the city. In the last year exams were taken, 50% of pupils gained a grade 4 or above in Maths.

Rated ‘good’ by Ofsted in 2019 under the new framework, the inspection team recognised:

“The pupils at Merit Pupil Referral Unit are very positive about the school, and they are right to be”

“Pupils and staff enjoy positive relationships with each other. Pupils encourage one another. They recognise that everyone is different and that all face challenges in life”

We strongly encourage prospective candidates to visit the school, to meet us and talk to anyone who works here to understand why Merit will be a transformative move for your career, please contact Mrs Whiteley by email:

Please see additional information for the package of benefits available if you are successful in your application.
