Here at Herefordshire Council, the Principal Social Worker is critical to enhancing the culture of learning, where the workforce feels heard, and is open to exploring their interests and working with new processes and practices to get the best for adults, their families, and their communities.

Three things we’re looking for are:
•    Significant post-qualifying experience to lead learning on best practice standards, legal literacy, case laws and serious case reviews;
•    An open mind to learning, emanating passion about adult social care; and
•    Making complicated information accessible to the workforce and our partners.

A day in the life of the Principal Social Worker, is working on understanding the individual staff member and the teams, meaningfully naming and celebrating their good practice, and bringing the energy for change where it’s needed   You will be required to share your technical expertise, knowledge, and skills across the directorate, with other leaders, and with the director of social services, recommending an effective schedule that improves experiences for everyone.

Our post emulates the purpose, key responsibilities and complexity from within the Department of Health and Social Care’s 2019 nationally aligned ‘Roles and Responsibilities: Adults Principal Social Worker’, and brings focus to an unblended role, avoiding pull and stretch, and improving impact and capacity to effectively carry out these functions.

To enhance objectivity and an impartial perspective, our post-holder will sit outside of adult social care, aligned instead to the directorate’s principles of practice team (working alongside the principal practitioner, the workforce development manager, and the practice standards lead), offering a range of advice, analyses, enabling learning opportunities, and systems development for legal literacy competence and confidence with our workforce stakeholders and partners.

In return we will offer:

•    Payment of professional membership fees
•    Professional Supervision from a Senior Social Worker
•    Subscription to the West-Midlands Networks: Principal Social Worker Network, Skills for Care Principal Social Worker Support, BASW, the Teaching Partnership Network and the Integrated Care Systems Network
•    Annual subscriptions to the leading adult social care Online Research Accounts
•    Regular Supervision and Support, Personal Development Planning and access to Personalised Training Account
•    25 days per year rising to 30 after 5 years’ service plus Bank Holidays and 2 days unpaid at Christmas (pro rata for part time)
•    Enrolment in the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)
•    A generous relocation package for eligible candidates
•    Pick your perks – our benefits include access to a range of retail, leisure, holiday and health benefits. This includes savings, cash back and discounts. We also offer an employee assistance programme that means you will have access to     confidential support and advice if you ever need it.

We welcome applicants whatever their personal characteristics or social identity.  All requests for flexible working arrangements and reasonable adjustments will be considered.

The following candidates will be interviewed if they meet the essential criteria for the post:

•    Those who indicate they have a disability.  This is part of our commitment to the ‘Disability Confident’ scheme.
•    Those who indicate in their supporting statement that they are an Armed Forces Veteran or Reservist.  This is part of our pledge to support the Armed Forces Covenant; and
•    Those who indicate in their supporting statement that they are a Herefordshire care leaver.  This is part of our commitment to supporting young people leaving our care
