Job Details

Birmingham is Bold, the definition of which is a willingness to take risks that are both confident and courageous. We need you to be the same, while being our moral compass and keeping us on track to deliver the golden decade of opportunity ahead.

We have bold ambitions, for our city and our citizens. There is no bigger, or more exciting place to work right now. The social and economic impact of Covid-19 on Birmingham means that you will be joining the council at a critical but also exciting time and one of re-charge and renewal. You will be starting at the beginning of the year we will host the Commonwealth Games, meaning the eyes of the World will be on Birmingham and our chance to shine on a global stage.

For legal professionals with a passion for problem solving and strategic thinking then Birmingham offers unrivalled opportunities, of a scale and complexity, unlike any other UK City. The size and breadth of issues we face gives challenges and opportunities like no other. It will test your professional skills and your intellectual ability as you provide trusted advice and guidance to the Council Leadership on a range of complex legal and governance issues.

As part of this crucial principle-led area, we want you to use your talents and experience to guide us as our new City Solicitor as we transform the services we deliver for our citizens. You will be responsible for translating our strategic vision and priorities into operational plans, monitoring their progress on a regular basis and identifying any concerns while giving robust guidance and advice as we deliver the bold vision.

We require someone with a strong understanding of how to manage complex stakeholders and is confident enough to work in a senior role in a high-profile organisation. You will be vital in upholding, improving and developing the ethical and corporate governance arrangements throughout the council, so therefore need to be authoritative and confident.

Above all, you will have a passion for ensuring the best is done for Birmingham citizens in the right way.

We are looking for an innovative and passionate individual, excited by the opportunity to work in one of the most exciting, dynamic and complex places, anywhere in the UK.

A highly skilled legal professional, who want to utilise all their skills and expertise, bringing innovation and guidance. We are relaxed in terms of your professional background and equally keen to appeal to a diverse and broad range of candidates from across sectors, so your experience may have been gained in the commercial or public sectors, and possibly across the two.

What is important however is that whilst legally astute you are a strategic, agile thinker with the vision and creativity to enable us to operate effectively and ethically.

Birmingham is an exceptional city and requires a City Solicitor to share our ambition and passion and have the skills and experience to help us get there. These are career defining and highly visible roles, working with a range of local and national partners. You will have a strategic understanding and depth of experience of leading significant legal cases and understand how to navigate complex governance issues.

We are keen to attract the best talent from the public and private sectors, and the City Council is absolutely committed to having a workforce that reflects the diverse local community it serves.

There is a clear vision which is ensuring that the Council is working for communities today and building for tomorrow, we focus our resources on five key priorities:

  • A Prosperous Birmingham: through a focus on inclusive economic growth, tackling unemployment, attracting inward investment, and maximising the benefits of the Commonwealth Games.
