Nature Recovery Project Officer - Ref: EE07321

  • 37 hours per week
  • £30,451 to £34,728 per annum
  • This is a fixed term contract to March 2023

Walsall Council are working in partnership with Canal and Rivers Trust to develop a Green Recovery network across West Midland canals. Our work will deliver environmental enhancements including the creation of wildlife corridors reconnecting fragmented habitat for endangered species such as water voles. The post holder will oversee part of the Waterways, Wildlife & Wellbeing Nature Recovery Network programme. This post is funded by the Government's Green Recovery Challenge Fund. 

It is an exciting time to be involved in the recovery of nature in Walsall which is recognised as being a particularly green borough and, its green spaces are an asset that the borough residents can be justifiably proud of.  Parks and green spaces are some of the most valued leisure and cultural facilities in Walsall, and these open spaces offer a green, leafy refuge where people can relax, contemplate and enjoy the fresh air and attractive floral displays, or participate in more active and healthy sporting and recreational pursuits. Our parks and countryside sites also provide important wildlife benefits and an outdoor classroom for learning. They all contribute greatly to the enrichment and quality of life of our community who live, work, and play in the borough.  In your role you will help to develop and deliver volunteering and habitat management projects, let small capital projects, manage contractors to deliver woodland creation works and restore areas of heathland, lead on community development work and develop/implement interpretation on multiple Local Nature Reserves and Open Spaces, all of which are linked along 50 km of the Canal and Rivers Trust network.

We are looking for candidates with experience in the following to help deliver a green recovery in Walsall:

  • Experience of developing and delivering local nature reserve conservation and woodland management projects
  • Experience of monitoring, delivering and evaluating contracted conservation and woodland management works
  • Experience of writing woodland management plans
  • Proven experience of recruiting and leading volunteers
  • Exceptional planning and organisational skills, with the ability to juggle competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with strong confidence in engaging colleagues and stakeholders to build trust and generate support for goals
  • The ability to work efficiently, making good use of time and resources, prioritise and work to deadlines
  • The ability to take initiative, be creative and proactive

Interested candidates should possess ability / qualifications as detailed:

- A degree level qualification on a relevant subject (Environmental Management; Conservation management or Forestry)

- A full driver’s licence
