 2 Academic Mentors (One in Maths and one in Science)

Full time (35 hours a week)

Fixed term contract until 31st August 2022

(This may be extended, subject to national funding)

Salary £19,000 pro rata

Required as soon as possible an Academic Mentor in Maths and one in Science.

As an Academic Mentor you will play a key role in the country’s recovery from Covid-19, as part of the government-backed National Tutoring Programme. With the aim to reach 250,000 pupils in England that may have encountered barriers to learning, this is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact by delivering quality tuition sessions to small groups.

We’re looking for passionate, driven and caring people to support those whose education has been most affected by the disruption caused by the pandemic. As an Academic Mentor you will be employed on a fixed term contract by the Academy to deliver a tailored programme of support, unique for each subject. We are looking to appoint a specialist to work with students in Maths and one to work with our students in Science to support with them in catching up and filling in the gaps in their learning and understanding of the work they have missed.

Joseph Leckie Academy is a vibrant, exciting and innovative mixed 11-18 Converter Academy with an overall progress score of +0.46 (2019). With these excellent results and our continual desire and drive to continue moving forward towards outstanding, this is an exciting time for you to join our team. Prior to the pandemic, the Academy remained for three years as the top non-selective secondary school for progress in Walsall based on validated results and is one of the highest performing secondary schools in the region.

The Academy continues to grow and thrive with approximately 1400 students. Our last Ofsted inspection in October 2021 judged the Academy to be good in all categories and for overall effectiveness with some excellent feedback, so this is an exciting time to be joining our Academy.

The role of this appointment will be as per the attached information although the precise responsibilities will be confirmed upon appointment.

Please note that the post holder may be required to work outside of the normal Academy working hours for example for extended mentoring after school activities, Academy events and parent’s evenings.

The successful candidate should:

  • have a degree in a relevant subject at 2.2 or above (Maths or Science) and/or Qualified Teacher Status
  • have Level 4 (Grade C) or above in GCSE maths and English or equivalent
  • have a clear understanding of secondary schools safeguarding and child protection issues, programmes and support
  • be able to inspire students and get the best from them
  • be positive, enthusiastic and resilient
  • be an effective team member
  • be ambitious for further career development and enhancement
  • have highly developed inter – personal skills and excellent ICT skills
  • have a high standard of communication skills
  • be able to work effectively with parents
  • be positive, enthusiastic and resilient
