We have a fantastic opportunity to join Birmingham City Council’s IT & Digital (IT&D) Service as a Web and Social Media Officer. This is an exciting time to join the IT&D team who are on a transformational journey to lead, shape and deliver great digital solutions enabling a positive difference to peoples' lives.

We are looking for an ambitious, hard-working and committed digital marketing professional to support and to help shape and lead great marketing campaigns which promote our internal and external programme delivery via multiple routes and solutions. You’ll have an excellent track record for delivering highly creative work and bringing new ideas across brand design, digital build and marketing projects and be someone that will turn your creative hand to a host of activities working across multiple teams and projects.

You will be joining the largest and one of the most diverse local authorities in the UK, serving just over 1 million residents and be part of our large IT and digital team in our Digital & Customer Service Directorate. This is at the heart of delivering over 250 services to our residents, business and visitors covering everything from bin collection and care to education and community services giving you massive exposure and opportunity to unleash your digital talent across multiple business areas.

This is unprecedented opportunity, where there is a serious investment in digital, a solid strategy to get behind, and a new CIO, Cheryl Doran, who is heavily committed in building great digital services within local government. You can read about Cheryl’s aspirations for our services here.

What will you be doing?

  • Develop and deliver an overarching digital communications brand strategy for IT&D ensuring consistency across a variety of platforms
  • Understand emerging trends in digital content, explore and recommend how these innovations can be applied to benefit the council’s services
  • Responsible for creating and designing media content using a variety of tools and techniques
  • Oversee any social media advertising and promotion for the service to maximise impact and value-for-money
  • Responsible for management of the IT&D websites and all social media channels to ensure consistency and impact
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with the all service areas and Leadership
  • Oversee the evaluation of performance of digital communications and channels to support a culture of continuous improvement

Skills and experience

You will:

  • have a Degree or relevant experience in Communications and/or Marketing
  • accept responsibility and accountability for your own work.
  • excellent communication skills with a “can-do” attitude, with the ability to work with a team and independently
  • have experience of working with multidisciplinary teams
  • have excellent verbal and written communication
  • have strong ICT skills with experience of using design software
  • experience or knowledge of working on SEO
  • have the ability to identify, manage and escalate risks
  • have good organisational skills with the ability to problem solve whilst working on multiple tasks to multiple deadlines
