Job Details

Experienced in Commercial Energy development?  Have operational experience within energy management? Do you enjoy having the autonomy to create your own work programme, giving you the freedom to achieve goals and make a real difference to people’s lives?

As Commercial Energy Delivery Manager you’ll help to secure carbon savings from the decarbonisation of commercial premises across the West Midlands as set out in the #WM2041 Five Year Plan.

As the commercial energy subject matter expert, you’ll develop a clear plan for engaging and supporting West Midlands based businesses to decarbonise, with a focus on near-site or onsite renewable energy generation, informed by establishing and managing a Commercial Green Energy Taskforce.

Our aim is to make the West Midlands fairer, greener and healthier and this includes delivering the climate change strategy where we are working across a wide range of activity to take the region to net zero carbon emissions by 2041.

Based within the West Midlands Combined Authority’s Energy Capital Team – the team tasked with delivering the Regional Energy Strategy and securing the powers and resources necessary to deliver it effectively - and will work across directorates and departments to deliver the net zero transition.

A fixed term contract for up to two years, secondments from other organisations are welcome.  You can work remotely, some minimal travel to meet stakeholders as required.

The Strategy and Economy directorate brings stakeholders in the region together around shared strategic ambitions to ensure that we are always more than the sum of our parts. The Directorate develops and supports the WMCA Corporate Strategy, and develops policy and programmes focussed on economic development, devolution, culture, digital, and other areas where the WMCA has an enabling and influencing role. The Directorate engages with Government, think tanks, universities, and others to make sure our voice is heard, and supports new and emerging policy thinking. The Directorate also hosts the Office for Data Analytics and Energy Capital, a regional public-private partnership.

About you

You’ll need to have operational experience in energy or facilities management, together with experience of the commercial energy development process, including business / investment case development and commercial partnerships.

You will work with Distributed Network Operators (Gas and Electricity systems) to negotiate cost-effective and risk mitigated grid connections, contractors and supporting local authorities to develop policies which facilitate renewable energy development, and so excellent interpersonal, collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills, and experience of working across all levels of an organisation, are needed.

You’ll enjoy working with and analysing data and be comfortable using data to inform decisions. You’ll understand legislation and compliance requirements for corporate energy management e.g. ESOS, ISO 14001 and have experience in full-energy surveys and feasibility studies for energy management, energy efficiency interventions and renewable energy technology deployment.

A ‘carbon reduction trailblazer’, you’ll be someone who wants to leave a lasting legacy in our region and someone who wants to make a difference to the future of our planet.
