Job Details

The City of Wolverhampton Council is seeking an enthusiastic Curatorial Officer to join our dynamic and hardworking Arts and Culture team. This permanent, full-time position is an ideal opportunity for an individual who is looking to advance their career and join a thriving and supportive organisation.

Culture plays a vital part in driving footfall to our city, as Wolverhampton emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic. Building on the success of British Art Show 9 in the city, the postholder will play a key role in creating a vibrant city for people to live, work and visit. As Curatorial Officer you will help to shape the City Council’s arts and culture programme for Arts Council England’s investment round 2023-26, responding to their investment principles and outcomes. You will build on the legacy of British Art Show 9 by working in partnership with the University of Wolverhampton and other creative organisations and practitioners.

This is an exciting opportunity to coordinate, deliver and shape an inspiring and innovative programme of projects, exhibitions and events across the city’s cultural sites (Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Bantock House, Bilston Gallery and the City Archives); a programme which combines historical exhibitions and contemporary art and craft with popular themed exhibitions aimed at maximising audiences. Your role will involve developing exhibitions and displays drawn from the city’s permanent collections, including our prestigious collections of Pop Art, works relating to the Troubles of Northern Ireland and work by Black British contemporary artists. You will ensure that our programmes are accessible to a broad audience and relevant to the diverse communities of our city. Co-creation and collaborative working will form a key part of many of these projects so a desire to test new ways of curating is essential.

As Curatorial Officer you will be responsible for the line management of the Exhibitions Assistant, and for overseeing the work of curatorial volunteers, providing exhibitions support against agreed visitor targets and other performance indicators. You will work closely with Learning staff to develop learning programmes that link closely to the exhibitions and events. The role also involves working closely with the marketing and communications team to ensure that exhibitions and events are effectively promoted and appropriate to specific target audiences.

The ideal applicant will be highly motivated, have a broad knowledge of arts and culture and be committed to sharing art with a wide and varied audience. You will have outstanding organisational skills, be an excellent communicator, and be used to juggling multiple projects and priorities.

Please see the job description and person specification for full details.

We particularly welcome applications from people from diverse backgrounds. The City of Wolverhampton Council is committed to Equalities and Diversity in the workplace.

Provisional dates for interviews: 3rd and 4th May
