Job Title: Associate Public Health Practitioner: Suicide Prevention
Salary: £26,700 - £28,468 per annum
35 hours
Location:
County Hall, Worcestershire. The role will involve some travel across Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
Permanent

The Role

Worcestershire County Council are seeking to appoint an experienced and skilled Associate Public Health Practitioner to support and deliver a systemwide programme of work focussing on suicide prevention.

The associate public health practitioner will be required to support the planning, implementation and roll out of place-based approaches to suicide prevention focussing on men across Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Working as part of the suicide prevention programme team, the postholder will work across the two counties and link with all partner organisations, council directorates and wider governance structures.

The suicide prevention programme team works locally in identified communities and will be responsible for ensuring that the suicide prevention approach increases community capacity and reaches targeted communities such as hard to reach, deprived and rural communities through intelligence and engagement, and innovative marketing campaigns. The postholder will be working closely with in communities to deliver the programme including supporting the distribution of seed funding to develop assets that will support men to develop and maintain social networks.

The postholder will support developing a campaign and brand that is relevant to men and contribute to local grass-roots asset-based community development approaches to reduce stigma around mental health and suicide and create ‘suicide safer’ places and communities. Some of the key areas of work as part of the programme include:

• Supporting the development of a network of community ambassadors to spot signs of loneliness, isolation or struggling with life within frequently used places
• Targeted work around engaging with men in relevant settings, including sports settings and rural communities
• Rolling out a suicide prevention training programme to upskill the workforce and community members across the two counties
• Providing small funding pots to spark or upscale grass roots asset-based community approaches
• Supporting the development of a programme of activity in workplaces and educational settings

We are looking to appoint a dedicated person with experience in public health and community development. Preferably with previous experience, or an understanding of mental illness and the impact of suicide on individuals and communities, with the confidence and ability to ‘hit the ground running’. We are seeking a proactive candidate with excellent communication skills, and the ability to work with a range of partners and community groups.

The full-time, permanent contract post will work as a member of the Worcestershire Public Health Team, People Directorate as well as with the Herefordshire Council Public Health team. The postholder will work with and support the Advanced Public Health Practitioner and Consultant in Public Health, tackling health inequalities and reducing suicides through public health approaches based on evidence, need and local data.

The post holder will have the opportunity to undertake other duties which fall within the grading of the post to develop a broader public health portfolio and align the suicide prevention work with other areas of public health e.g. mental health and wellbeing.  This is reflected in the generic job description provided.  It is expected that all public health staff develop flexible working practices both within any relevant local public health networks and at other organisational levels as appropriate, to be able to meet the challenges and opportunities of working in public health as they arise.

Benefits

In return, you can look forward to:

• 25 days’ annual leave, plus bank holidays
• 35-hour working week, with flexible working, including remote working opportunities
• Commitment to ongoing professional development and training.
• Excellent opportunities for career progression
