Student Environmental Health Practitioner (Housing) x 2 posts, Ref CH01922

Salary: This post qualifies for the Living Wage. The Council is committed to paying the Living Wage which is currently £9.90 per hour. This arrangement will be reviewed annually.

Hours: 37 hours per week

Term: Two fixed positions for up to 24 months

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two highly motivated, talented and enthusiastic students to join our friendly Housing Standards & Improvement Team.

The post holders will have the opportunity to undertake a wide range of learning and practical experience. This is intended to assist the successful applicants in meeting the housing (and possibly all of the) elements of either the Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP) or the Chartered Practitioners Programme (CPP) routes. 

About the team

The team deals with all aspects of Private Sector Housing, including, minimum standards in rented accommodation, Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO), Energy Efficiency and Empty Homes, Disabled Facilities Grants as well as public health matters. However, this role will focus mainly on inspecting, licensing and enforcing standards in HMOs within and outside of an Additional Licensing area.

Is the Student Environmental Health Practitioner (Housing) role for you?

These posts are only open to those individuals currently in but preferably, those

  • who have completed their second year of a BSc (Hons) Environmental Health degree or
  • MSc course accredited with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).

What will the role involve?

The work will be varied and will involve joint visits with officers and others to help improve the lives of our residents through helping them tackle issues including (but not limited to);

  • Housing disrepair;
  • HMO (mandatory & additional) licensing
  • Compliance with Electrical Safety Regulations and Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES).
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning;
  • Supporting the work of home energy efficiency team.
