Senior Cyber Officer - Ref: RT01922
G9: £34,373 - £39,571 per annum.

At Walsall Council Digital and Technology Services (DaTS), we support and develop a wide range of business applications while pursuing an ambitious program of work to improve our digital capability.

We have a brilliant opportunity for a proactive, hardworking, self-motivated enthusiastic person to join our Cyber Security Team and help us shape our cyber security services to make sure we make the best use of the comprehensive set of tools that we have and offer the best protection for the council and its customers.  This is a great opportunity to join an organisation where there is commitment and serious investment in cyber security.

We are looking for someone that has experience in Microsoft tools who is willing to actively seek out and understand current and emerging cyber security threats and monitor and develop tools and devices to minimise risk and impact to the council.

Some of the things you’ll get involved with are:

  • Monitoring and maintaining cyber security across all aspects of corporate technology
  • Supporting the implementation of new threat management technologies
  • Leading complex investigations and undertaking vulnerability assessments relating to cyber security
  • Providing first point of contact for security incidents and overseeing them as required, including communications with business representatives
  • Providing advice to customers regarding any cyber related issues
  • Procuring, via line management, new DaTS cyber infrastructure and software in accordance with council procurement procedures
  • Identifying needs, specifying work packages and overseeing the work of third-party support
  • Providing training/coaching to other DaTS officers on cyber architecture, management systems and support processes
  • Acting as a second, after line manager, as a point of contact for any business-critical support requirements from the DaTS Service Desk and take ownership for resolution
  • Attending and being an active participant in working/project groups and other meetings, as the team’s representative
  • Developing and maintaining security policies and procedures
  • Initiating and suggesting new DaTS cyber infrastructure technology or service concepts as part of continual service improvement.

As a Senior Cyber Officer, and as a key member of the Cyber Security Team some of the skills and experience you will need are:

  • Experience with cyber methods and technologies
  • Excellent IT skills, particularly with Microsoft products
  • Excellent, verbal, listening and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage your own time and workload and to sometimes work under pressure
  • An understanding of the application of risk management
  • Practical experience of managing a range of stakeholders
  • A good appreciation of wider local government and relevant national issues
  • An aptitude and willingness to learn.

There are also many benefits to being part of our team here at Walsall including:

  • Our commitment to attracting, developing and retaining talent – we can offer you an opportunity to make a difference and better the lives of the people of this exciting borough.
  • Active promotion of learning and development opportunities for all our employees to help them progress and gain new skills.
  • We believe that work is defined by what we do and not where we do it, so we offer a flexible and supportive working environment to emphasize an optimum work/life balance arrangement.
  • We offer you a range of benefits such as flexible working options, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme, excellent holiday entitlement and a variety of opportunities to support your learning and development.

If you are interested in becoming part of our team why not take a look at our Job Description and Employee Specification attached below?  We’d love to hear from you!

For this role the successful candidate must undergo a Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check.  BPSS is the minimum standard to ensure the identity and integrity of an employee who has access to official information using secure networks linking central government and local authorities.  A BPSS check involves four main elements; Identity Check, National and Immigration Status, Employment History (last 3 years) and Verification of Criminal Record (unspent convictions only).

This post is covered by the Government’s Code of Practice on the English Language Fluency Duty for public sector workers.  The post holder will be required to communicate verbally with customers and provide advice and/or information in accurate spoken English.
