Job Details

WMCA is continually evolving as an organisation. We currently have numerous major projects taking place in the fields of Transport, Housing, Regeneration and Skills. Now is an exciting time to join, as we embed our vision and purpose and transform how we work and how we manage our performance, our culture and behaviours and the structure of the organisation.

Our approach to Governance has recently improved, having undertaken a review of the way in which we make decisions. We are moving away from a traditional way of working to a modern, more engaging, and inclusive process. Our new Head of Corporate Support and Governance will continue this process in leading and developing a team to improve the way decisions are made. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join us at a pivotal moment for our organisation.

As Head of Corporate Support and Governance, you will provide the necessary leadership, scrutiny, vision, and executive support for the whole organisation which ensures the integrity and efficiency of administrative and governance systems and procedures.

What will you be doing?

  • Work with the Mayor, Board Members, Chief Officers, and senior leaders as a trusted advisor.
  • Support the Director of Law and Governance as the principal adviser to the Mayor, Chief Executive and Boards on all issues relating to Corporate Governance and the correct and proper conduct of business and meetings.
  • Provide strategic, corporate support to the Chief Executive’s Office.
  • Lead on all Governance and support services delivery with a clear framework for business partnership across all our stakeholders and partners.
  • Provide leadership and management of direct reports and the wider team, ensuring that individual development is aligned with the aims and objectives of the WMCA and ensuring succession planning and resilience in the team.
  • Be accountable for setting standards and improving processes in all areas of accountability with a focus on scrutiny and implementation of Governance recommendations

About you

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced strategic leader who understands change and Governance and is comfortable working in an ever-changing environment. You will have considerable experience working with leading politicians across the political divide in a Governance or policy role. You should also be committed to continuous improvement, passionate about building capability and developing others.

You will be able to evidence where you have provided advice on Governance matters that have positively impacted an organisation’s effectiveness; be able to demonstrate where you have forged high-level partnerships and relationships which have influenced policy decisions and performance; and be eminently capable of providing high-quality, customer-focused corporate governance support to Boards and/or Committees.

The role will suit someone who can think strategically and systemically, as well as being comfortable with detail, and who has strong project and programme management skills, with an ability to manage problems actively and seek resolutions.

If you thrive on new challenges, this is a great place to work, and a terrific opportunity to make a difference in an ever-changing environment.
