An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Wolverhampton City Council’s SEND Assessment and Review Team (SENSTART) SEND Officer with a specific focus on our vulnerable groups of children and young people with EHCPs or under assessment for an EHCP. These groups are children/young people in care, young people known to Youth Offending Team and those children and young people who are Elective Home Educated or receive an Education other than at School package.

The post sits within SENSTART, which is a supportive team of experienced officers and casework assistants. We are committed to working closely with children, young people and their families to ensure a person-centred approach to all aspects of SEND assessment and review. The team consists of 1 service manager, 3 team leaders, 10 FTE SEND officers and 6 FTE SEND Casework Assistants as well as a SEND Funding & Finance Officer.

SENSTART is part of Wolverhampton's Inclusion and Empowerment service, which includes the Inclusion team of specialist teachers, Virtual School and other professionals. We work closely with the Educational Psychology Service under joint leadership arrangements.  This is a forward-thinking service which places best outcomes for children and young people at the heart of all we do.

Key requirements

The new post holder will be either an experienced SEN Casework Officer or have substantial experience of working within SEND and vulnerable groups within a local authority or educational/social care context. They will have a strong understanding of relevant legislation, be able to work to statutory timescales, possess excellent interpersonal and written communication skills and have a willingness to work proactively with other agencies to ensure the best possible outcomes within available time and financial resources. The role includes line management responsibility for SEND officers and SEN casework assistants.

The role has been identified as a flexible post meaning the post holder will be required to be flexible on working location throughout a working week, based on business need.
