About Us & The Role

Engineering Design Services, Warwickshire County Council is offering an exciting opportunity, as an alternative to a full-time degree, to join their Bridge and Structural Design Team as a Civil Engineering Degree Apprentice. The apprenticeship is a great opportunity to work with experienced engineers and to earn a salary, whilst working towards a BEng Civil Engineering Degree with our academic partners at the University of Warwick. On completion of the Degree and our professional training scheme by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Apprentice will be sponsored to apply for the internationally recognised Incorporated Engineer (IEng) professional qualification with the ICE cementing your credentials as a professionally trained and qualified Civil Engineer.

Working for the local authority will enable you to develop technical, managerial and commercial skills through the varied work experience offered by our programme of civil engineering infrastructure projects. Our projects involve working as part of large integrated teams including Project Managers, Asset Managers, Highways, and Traffic Signals Engineers which encompasses a broad range of civil engineering disciplines.

The Bridge and Structural Design Team is a civil engineering business unit within the Local Authority that provides a design and construction service to both the private and public sector. We also work in partnership with neighbouring local authorities, Solihull Municipal Borough Council and Coventry City Council, providing technical support to new highway schemes and the maintenance of existing structural assets. Within Warwickshire County Council, the team also provides technical engineering support to other County Council Departments delivering enhancements to existing farming infrastructure and waste management facilities and we have even had the opportunity to provide a technical advisory role to local government projects in Sierra Leone where they are seeking to improve their local municipal facilities.

As a Degree Apprentice you will be assisting other Engineers within the team in the delivery of projects ranging from small highway improvement schemes to multi-million-pound infrastructure projects. You will be involved with the production of feasibility studies for new schemes; the technical design of new highway structures using a broad range of techniques including advanced structural modelling software; communicating and liaising with a wide range of stakeholders and members of the public; preparing and tendering construction contracts including drawings, specifications, and contract documents; and construction site supervision and contract administration.

The training provider is the University of Warwick. The degree component of the course runs for five years.
