About Us and the Role

 

Warwickshire County Council is the largest employer in Warwickshire, and it is responsible for the roads and highways within the county area. By joining County Highways you’ll be involved from day one in a key area within the County Council, working to keep the County moving by planning and designing improvements to the exist road and transport infrastructure.

 

Working within various groups within County Highways you’ll gain valuable experience in the various works activities for highway maintenance to keep Warwickshire moving.

 

Our teams include –

 

  • Client – Our customer facing team who identify and resolve issues on the highway and work with residents, Parish, Town, District council and County Councillors to ensure Warwickshire meets its obligations under the Highways Act.
  • Delivery – Our engineers who investigate, cost and design highway structural maintenance schemes/works. The works are delivered in conjunction with our maintenance contractor and can include works such as carriageway/footway reconstruction, resurfacing, structural patching, micro-asphalt, surface dressing, footway slurry sealing and drainage schemes.
  • Minor Works – Another team of engineers who enable small scale capital projects for a range of clients which includes traffic schemes, signing and road markings.
  • Contract & Policy – A team who deal with highway condition surveys and systems, contract policy and strategy, health and safety, environmental strategy, winter services, highway depots, and financial and contractual requirements.
  • Street Lighting – Our lighting team who are responsible for street lights and lit signs including all maintenance and design work on the existing highway and new developments.
  • Forestry – Our forestry team who work on the highway and with Warwickshire properties to maintain and advise on our green infrastructure

 

You will be joining a successful apprenticeship scheme within County Highways which over the last 9 years has recruited 16 apprentices, with 3 nominated and 1 winner of Apprentice of the Year. Our apprentices are valued members of the team, and we encourage you to grow into a confident Engineer, encouraging you to gain professional qualifications, whilst always providing the necessary support and guidance.

 

Based in an office or onsite environment you will always be well supervised, work duties undertaken by you will be closely monitored so that you gain good experience on the technical aspects and duties required to enable County Highways to undertake its highway maintenance activities.

 

We will ensure you receive any necessary on the job training, and you will attend college on a one day a week basis to gain the understanding and knowledge required to undertake this work and gain a level 3 qualification in Civil Engineering.
