Job Details

Dudley Council is looking for an enthusiastic professional to join its Historic Environment Team, which provides specialist advice on development affecting the historic environment.

Hours/Contract: Permanent, 37 hours per week

Salary: Grade 7 (SCP 18-23, £25,419.00 to £28,226.00).

Location: Hybrid working – From home and when required at 4 Ednam Road, Dudley and within borough undertaking site visits/meetings.

You will need a sound working and practical knowledge of the historic development, construction and detailing of buildings, as well as all other areas of conservation practice, relevant legislation and current issues. You will have good interpersonal, teamworking, negotiation and communication skills (including the ability to write clear and well-structured reports) and a high level of initiative. You must hold a degree in an appropriate discipline and ideally hold a Post Graduate Diploma in heritage conservation. Eligibility for associate membership of the IHBC, or willingness to work towards this is also desirable. Applicants who have alternative relevant experience will also be considered. The post may be suited to a planning officer wishing to move into a specialist role, or to a historic environment professional who wishes to develop their career in a development management environment.

The main duties are:

  • To take an active part in providing advice and guidance on listed and locally listed buildings and conservation areas and on other design and conservation matters to both internal and external customers e.g. planning applications, pre-application advice and relevant enforcement enquiries.
  • To work with other members of the Historic Environment Team and wider council on regeneration projects such as the Brierley Hill High Street Heritage Action Zone (HAZ), Dudley Townscape Heritage scheme and similar projects which may arise in the borough
  • To work with colleagues in Planning Policy in the preparation and implementation of the Historic Environment related aspects of the Development Plan including undertaking Conservation Area Character Appraisals.

The borough has a wealth of architectural and archaeological heritage with 11 Scheduled Monuments, approaching 300 Listed and 400 Locally listed buildings;  22 Conservation Areas; and 2 registered historic parks and gardens. The area includes Dudley Castle, the Red House Glass Cone and is part of the Black Country Geopark. The post holder will be able to work in a mobile and agile way from home and from the office located at 4 Ednam Road in Dudley Town Centre, joining a friendly, experienced and supportive specialist team, working in a fast-paced environment, reporting directly to the Principal Historic Environment Officer, as part of the Projects and Placemaking Service.
