“Be Bold, Be Birmingham”. We are looking to recruit Specialist Senior Educational Psychologists (SSEPs) to join our dynamic and innovative service. The successful applicants, working with the Senior Educational Psychologists, will provide collaborative leadership and management support for the North or East Area Teams alongside service delivery to settings in the area. SSEPs are part of the Service’s leadership team so duties will also involve contribution to service-wide operational and strategic priorities. This includes a specialist lead in priority areas for development.  We are particularly interested in seeking motivated colleagues who can lead and support ongoing developments with the following areas:

• Social Care - lead our working relationships with LA services supporting our most vulnerable children and young people within the city (Birmingham Children Trust and Adult Social Care).
• Assessment/Tribunals – lead to support ongoing development and review of standards and innovation with the purposes and scope of assessments and the way they are communicated to a range of audiences.
We would be happy to hear of existing initiatives related to strengths and interests that would inform the developments of these leads.

We would welcome you to join and support the professional development of skilled and creative educational psychologists who work in a vibrant, diverse and resilient city where children/young people, schools, families and the Local Authority value the contribution that EPs make.  Our service delivery is driven by values of inclusion, integrity, empathy, collaboration and advocacy. In addition to our core statutory functions, we have been successfully trading with schools since 2011 and are the primary provider of high-quality evidence-based psychology through the four service area teams and city-wide initiatives such as SCERTS, Trauma Informed Attachment Aware Schools (TIAAS), Friends for Life and ELSA. We will be introducing Bruce Perry’s ‘Neurosequential Model in Education’ from September 2022.

In addition to the opportunity to work in a service that values professional autonomy and cutting-edge practice, you will benefit from terms and conditions that include:

•    Agile working and opportunities to work flexibly and from home
•    Generous annual leave allocation (up to 34 days plus up to 15 days flexi-leave and 8 bank Holidays)
•    Payment in full of HCPC registration costs
•    6 sessions of whole service CPD a year and protected personal CPD time and access to a CPD budget

Birmingham EPS is a friendly and highly supportive service where collaboration and peer supervision are actively encouraged and fundamental in maintaining our service culture and ethos. The service has strong relationships with Educational Psychology training courses through tutor links and have a long-standing reputation of supporting trainee EPs on placements. We are committed to promoting professional development at all levels. We value research and support colleagues to work towards publication of their research and professional practice.

We are seeking applications from qualified EPs who are current or aspiring managers who can demonstrate relevant experience through their existing and past roles of leadership within their practice, and through supervision of and with others.
All qualified applicants must be registered with and operate within the professional code of ethics and practice guidelines of the Health and Care Professions Council.

If you are interested in working with us and wish to discuss this opportunity further, please contact Dr Pauline Bromfield, Acting Principal Educational Psychologist, Pauline.Bromfield@birmingham.gov.uk.

The Council is a fantastic place to work. You will find an organisation that is both challenging and supportive; with a leadership impatiently adventurous in its pursuit of excellence.

There is a clear vision which is ensuring that the Council is working for communities today and building for tomorrow, we focus our resources on five key priorities:

  • A Prosperous Birmingham: through a focus on inclusive economic growth, tackling unemployment, attracting inward investment, and maximising the benefits of the Commonwealth Games.
  • An Inclusive Birmingham: through a focus on tackling poverty and inequality, empowering citizens, promoting diversity and civic pride, and supporting and enabling all children and young people to thrive.
  • A Safe Birmingham: through a focus on making the city safer, safeguarding vulnerable citizens, increasing affordable housing, and tackling homelessness.
  • A Healthy Birmingham: through a focus on tackling health inequalities, encouraging physical activity and healthy living, supporting mental health, and improving outcomes for adults with disabilities and older people.
  • A Green Birmingham: through a focus on street cleanliness, improving air quality, continuing the route to net zero, and becoming a city of nature.

We see the Council’s role as providing strategic leadership – that’s being able to visualise a new future for the city and equipping others to share our vision. We want to ensure the provision of services for all, so we can support those least able to support themselves by working with partners and putting citizens and neighbourhoods at the heart of our decision-making.

We are always looking for people who put the customer at the centre of their approach, with a commitment to excellence to help us achieve our vision.  We will support you to develop and thrive in your role, building a pathway for long-term success, with lots of development opportunities, such as apprenticeships.

In return, we offer you excellent terms and conditions, generous annual leave, a great pension scheme, well-being support, annual travel passes and discounts at a number of city centre establishments.
