Job Description

 

1.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

1.1

  • To create, oversee and promote a youth provision in the Great Dawley area aimed at children and young people primarily aged 11-16 years old.

 

2.

MAIN DUTIES

2.1

Youth Work

  • Work with stakeholders and partners to identify gaps in the youth provision available to children and young people of Great Dawley. Agree with manager a focus for contact work with individual young people and groups of young people including attending other established groups within Great Dawley. Gain trust and respect from young people contacted to develop good relationships. To identify and engage with NEETS To deliver face to face youth work. Look to create youth provision in the local area providing a safe space for young people. Agree a plan with Chief Officer for providing a programme of accessible youth work activity, including a fixed-site club as appropriate, in response to young people's needs and interests Involve young people in the planning and delivery of this programme and assist them with access to other opportunities within the community Create action plan to help promote and increase participation of young people from Dawley area in the T&W youth parliament to encourage empowerment Promote & develop young leaders, giving them access to opportunities in the community. To build & maintain positive relationships with the young people in the area. Audit and promote existing youth provision Apply for funding from external agencies for youth related projects and services. Record and evaluate activities undertaken and promote the work of the project to parents and stakeholders within the community. Write reports at key stages of the project to demonstrate lessons learned, achievements and benefits.

 

2.2

Stakeholder Management

  • To be aware of and build on the relationships with partners, residents, and community groups within the community. Stakeholders that include The Langley School, West Mercia Police, local churches, business throughout Great Dawley
  • To work with the Borough Council and be able to highlight Borough Council initiatives within the Community.

 

 

 

2.3

Community Liaison

  • Support local groups, volunteers and residents to maximise participation by local young people.
  • Attend local youth provision, established groups within Great Dawley.
  • Liaise with the community to identify what is needed in the community.
  • Make youth services accessible to the community.

3.

CONTACTS

3.1

  • Report directly to the Chief Officer
  • Work alongside current at Great Dawley Town Council
  • Work on joint projects/ events with Town Council staff
  • Regular contact with Town Council and Borough Councillors.
  • Regular contact with residents, visitors & community groups.
  • Regular contact with stakeholders

 

4.

HOURS OF WORK

4.1

  • The post holder will work 37 hours per week, hours and times as agreed with the Chief Officer in advance to suit the business needs.
  • This post will require evening and weekend work
  • Flexible working is encouraged by Great Dawley Town Council
  • Generally Great Dawley Town Council offices based at 35 High Street, Dawley and are open from 9.00 am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.

1.

EXPERIENCE

 

 

 

ESSENTIAL

 

  • A genuine passion for working with children and young people and supporting their engagement and progression.
  • Maintaining and completing up to date records of work completed with children and young people in accordance with GDPR and Data Protection policies.
  • Experience of partnership working
  • History of conflict resolution with young people
  • At least 2 years experience in similar role working with young people

 

DESIRABLE

 

 

 

  • Experience of working with children and young people who have been involved in anti-social behaviour or adopting unhealthy behaviour and encouraging positive behaviour change
  • Knowledge of the local area
  • Experience of working for a Town/ Parish government

 

 

2.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

 

 

ESSENTIAL

 

  • Completing up to date records of work completed with children and young people in accordance with GDPR and Data Protection policies The ability to conduct comprehensive risk assessments for all activities and sessions, including risk assessing individuals to ensure the safety of services, users and self. Excellent communication skills. ​Support the young people and assist them to develop life skills To work with young people with varying needs and challenges, (e.g.  Mental ill-health, anger issues, learning disabilities, substance misuse issues and those at risk of offending behaviour.) ​To build effective relationships with parents and/or carers, schools, communities and local organisations. To be focused, polite, professional, engaging to all individuals and colleagues, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

  • Ability to present reports to Council/ members of the public.

Company

Great Dawley Town Council was formed in 1988 and is the parish authority for Dawley and Malinslee, with a population of approximately 12,000 and an electorate of 8545.  The Town Council is divided into four wards, Dawley, Malinslee, Trinity and Doseley Road and has a total of fourteen members covering the four wards.

The Council is administered from Great Dawley Town Council offices at 35 High Street, Dawley in the heart of Dawley Centre.  The Town Council has a number of responsibilities and services it delivers for the local community and these items are paid through the annual precept and budget setting process.
