East Staffordshire Borough Council provides a wide range of services, maintaining a strong level of performance and providing value for money to all our residents. An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Building Control Team as an Administrative Apprentice, with the opportunity to study towards a nationally recognised qualification.

In general terms, the Building Control Service ensures that buildings are constructed properly and in accordance with current standards and regulations. This is done by checking the information provided on the application plans and then inspecting the construction work as it progresses on site.

Principally, the building regulations:
- safeguard the health and safety of people in and around buildings;
- conserve energy;
- provide access and facilities for people with disabilities.

Working in a busy Building Control team, the role supports the work of the Building Control Surveyors by providing the essential administrative functions to help deliver a first rate service to our customers.

We are looking for a candidate who can assist in the provision of a high quality, customer focussed Building Control Service. You must be able to produce accurate quality controlled work, have excellent literacy skills and the ability to communicate in a concise and professional manner.

You must also be able to maintain good working relationships with members of staff from all levels of the organisation. You should have a minimum of 5 GCSE passes including English and Mathematics or equivalent.

The ability to create and use word processing documents and e-mail will form an important part of the role.

Experience of being part of a team and an appreciation of Council services would be an advantage.

We are looking for an individual who is committed to learning and has a desire to study to achieve an NVQ level 2 in Business Administration with the possibility of achieving further qualifications in building control.

The contract will be temporary for initially 18 months with the possibility of further training and employment with the Council.
