About the Public Participation Team

Leading public involvement and developing engagement activity, we’ll ensure the Council can make the best possible use of the insight we gather from Birmingham’s communities. We’ll grow a deeper understanding of public attitudes, experiences, and concerns, to help the Council inform, shape, and improve its services. Bringing together expertise in social and attitudinal research as well as public involvement techniques and approaches, we’ll guide other directorates in their engagement activity. And we’ll set new standards for engaging citizens in strategic programmes.

About the role

Reporting to the Head of Public Participation, your focus will be on developing and leading public engagement activity across the Council. This includes managing and coaching the team to design and champion public involvement to reach under-represented communities, as well as supporting directorates in their engagement activity.

The operational lead on public involvement projects, we’ll look to you to develop guidance on how best to engage citizens in strategic programmes – advising on forums and the most effective mechanisms to use.  This is an opportunity for you to drive positive change and help to develop a better shared understanding of key challenges facing the city.

To be successful in this role it’s likely that you’ll bring:

  • A degree-level qualification undertaking research and insight methods or policy analysis and development or equivalent experience
  • Skills in advising senior leaders on a range of policy issues relating to public involvement
  • Success working with elected members in a multi-agency context
  • Skills in influencing and engaging with a variety of stakeholders to drive policy, insight and performance agendas (2-year horizon)
  • Experience of operating in a politically sensitive environment, with an understanding of the challenges facing Local Government
