The Neighbourhoods Division is responsible for Birmingham’s Neighbourhood Advice, Neighbourhood Development, Cultural Development, Sport & Leisure, Community and Wellbeing Centres and Events. We operate a combined model of directly and externally managed services and these are delivered through various forms such as partnerships, community infrastructure, contracts with external parties, commissioned delivery etc.
The Sport Service is responsible for strategically positioning and leading Birmingham in all aspects of physical activity, driving partnerships to ensure local residents benefit from the services on offer, delivering a wide range of leisure functions, and creating an environment to position Birmingham at the forefront of sporting excellence for the UK.
The Commonwealth Games offers an opportunity to reposition Birmingham as the most active and successful sporting city in England. We are ambitious and determined to maximise the opportunities that hosting the Commonwealth Games brings, including increased capital investment into the city.
Our key service priorities are to improve the health and wellbeing of local communities through continued and increasing levels of participation, and to explore and develop partnerships with external organisations where these will benefit the community and/or provide affordable and sustainable local sporting services.
We are looking to appoint a highly motivated and experienced officer to support with the day to day and long-term management of capital development programmes and associated sports development programmes within the Council. The successful Officer will bring additional capacity and expertise to capital development projects enabling the Council to progress its strategic vision for sport and physical activity.
As the Sports Development Officer (Capital Facilities) for the Sports Service, you will support the Senior Sports Manager (Strategy) and Sports Development Manager in identifying new capital facilities opportunities across the City for existing and new leisure provision and creating a sustainable legacy.
You will have experience of working within a sport and physical activity environment and have a successful track record in supporting and delivering capital projects. Responsibilities range from supporting the refurbishment of Moseley Road Baths, to the development and refurbishment of new and existing outdoor leisure provision such as multi-use games areas and tennis courts, to supporting local clubs and organisations with capital related enquiries and funding applications.
You will be required to engage and work with a range of partners, including National Governing Bodies of Sport, Sport England, national charities and local community sector organisations, and design and construction teams, through to a range of internal teams and colleagues across the Council, to ensure the successful delivery of capital projects.
You will have experience of working with a wide range of partners and stakeholders, preparing reports, and bid writing, conducting data analysis and community engagement, and a proven track record in project management.
Knowledge and Skills:
The right candidate will have excellent interpersonal and negotiating skills with the ability to communicate with a wide range of people from several different external organisations. They will have excellent organisational skills, be able to work in a pressurised environment to meet tight deadlines and demonstrate effective IT skills.
There will inevitably be the requirement to work during the evenings, weekends and over Bank Holidays as required by the business and it is desirable that the post holder have their own motor vehicle available for which an appropriate allowance will be paid.
