30 Hours per week – Potential for 35 Hours (to be spread across 5 days per week.)

Term Time + 1 Week (PD Days)

Scale SO1 (£14.63 - £15.60 per hour)

Per Annum on 30 hours (£19,513 - £20,807) dependent on experience and length of service

Car Necessary – Essential Car Allowance of £80.50 per month + monthly claim form (visits per mile)

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and flexible Education Welfare Officer. The post will be based at Burton Borough School but will support and advise a further 10 schools, 1 Secondary and 9 Primary, within the Newport Cluster.

Working with our group of schools, you will offer strategic and practical support to schools including working with children and families to ensure that children benefit from a range of educational opportunities. 

We are seeking an extremely knowledgeable candidate, ideally with experience of working within an educational setting with the ability to manage their own workload.  The role includes the day to day, line management of the Early Intervention Practitioner. Prioritising work across the participating schools will be vital to ensure that all settings are delivered effective support, advice and guidance in managing their school attendance.

The Education Welfare Officer is required to offer a quality provision to children, their families and schools.  Working closely with Head Teachers, pastoral staff and external agencies the duties will include home visits to ascertain reasons for non-attendance, accurate record keeping and the administration of a range of legal procedures to ensure that the law in relation to compulsory school attendance is upheld.

Main areas

  • To have an excellent working knowledge of relevant legislation relating to non- school attendance. Be able to advise the Head teacher, children and young people, school staff and parents/carers on the implications of such legislation and its practical application.
  • To provide children and young people and parents/carers with an effective advice and support service, employing listening skills in the provision of the above. Liaise between home and school, involving other support agencies as appropriate, including social care, early intervention teams and medical and counselling services.
  • To be knowledgeable about the educational guidelines on child protection in order to advise staff and ensure that all child protection issues are dealt with promptly, effectively and according to up to date policy and procedure.
  • To advise, assist and monitor schools in managing their overall attendance and punctuality in order to increase attendance to above the national Average. To assist in the training of school staff in respect of attendance (including court proceedings and registers/electronic systems).*
  • To prepare and assist under section 444 of the Education Act 1996 cases of non-school attendance for Magistrates court, including Penalty Fines. Attend and give evidence in court if required.
  • Ideally supervisory/line management experience.

This person will be working on behalf of the Newport Cluster Support Services but based at Burton Borough School.
