Walsall Council’s Sport & Leisure Services are offering an exciting opportunity for a swimming, leisure, and fitness enthusiast to develop a career in the leisure industry.
Working out of one of our four leisure facilities you will be trained, mentored, and supported through a range of experiences as you gain knowledge and insight of the industry.
Our training provider, ActivFirst, will support you through your studies which will mostly be delivered onsite at your place of work. By the end of the 2 year period as well as having gained valuable work experience you will be qualified in the following:
-
- National Pool Lifeguard Qualification
- Level 2 STA Certificate in Teaching Swimming
- Level 2 Certificate in Fitness or Gym Instruction
- Level 3 Certificate in First Aid
- Level 2 Leisure Team Member apprenticeship standard
The main focus of your work will be keeping customers safe while lifeguarding busy swimming pools as well as developing your skills to teach swimming lessons to babies, toddlers, children and adults as part of the Walsall Swim Academy, plus delivering 'learn to swim' sessions for schools.
Don’t worry though, you won’t be thrown in at the deep end (see what we did there?!) as you will be assigned a mentor from our experienced team of staff to support your development. Initially you will teach alongside an experienced instructor as you gain experience and confidence, with a view to teaching your very own groups of children unassisted as you progress.
While the main focus of the role is aquatics we will ensure that your knowledge of the whole business is developed. Away from the pool there will also be opportunities to work with fitness teams in our busy gyms and group exercise studios, and to learn about how our reception teams work as you develop a wider knowledge of our membership packages and associated products.
We don’t expect you to come with experience or qualifications, but we do need you to be a ‘people person’ with an outgoing personality, willingness to learn, and above all a commitment to providing excellent customer service. Leisure is a fun and fast paced industry and your shifts (days, evenings, and weekends) will fly by but it's also hard work and does include some physical work such as cleaning and setting up of equipment.
Swimming ability is important and as part of the selection process you’ll need to demonstrate your ability to pass and maintain (via monthly ongoing training) your National Pool Lifeguard Qualification. The criteria is:
- Swim 50m in less than 1 minute.
- Swim 100m continuously on your front then 100m on your back.
- Tread water in deep water for more than 30 seconds.
- Surface dive to the deepest part of the pool.
- Climb out of the pool unaided
As a member of the team you’ll have access to our pool and gym facilities outside of your work hours to help you maintain your fitness.
The facilities where Aquatics Apprentice post are available are:
- Darlaston Swimming & Fitness Centre
- Bloxwich Active Living Centre
- Oak Park Active Living Centre
- Walsall Gala Swimming & Fitness Centre
You can select which site(s) you would like to be considered for during the application process.
