HEAD OF TRANSPORT DEVELOPMENT AND INFORMATION

Salary GR7 -  £58,707 - £76197

It’s been said that we are a city on the move; are you ready to bring your strengths in leadership to our team?

Birmingham is the place to be right now – it’s a vibrant city with a bold agenda for change.  The Council Plan is critical to how we’re transforming our services to make everyday life better for our citizens and local communities.  And our Place, Prosperity and Sustainability directorate is critical to that transformation.  Outstanding leadership and vision are at the forefront of how we want to do things differently in Transport and Connectivity.  That’s where you come in.  Are you up for a new challenge?

This is a new role bringing three existing teams together in one coherent Transport Development and Information service that you shape and do things a little differently.  There’s a team to manage and an agenda to deliver and that’s where your outstanding relationship building strengths and influencing skills will be utilized.  There’ll be priorities to negotiate, individuals and networks to bring on board, as well as councillors to update and government departments to consult.  And as you’d expect there’ll be technical challenges that will draw on your strengths and expertise in information services and transport controls.

Our Transport and Development plans, our Property, Levelling Up and IT strategies, not to mention our need for savings will all have an influence on your role.  And you on them, so it’s highly likely that you’ll be working in a similar environment already.  Perhaps it’s time to move to the largest local authority in Europe from one of our partners or maybe it’s time for you to take on a more significant leadership role?

It’s time to demonstrate your leadership capabilities and in-depth understanding of transportation, highways, planning, property, land management and surveying, as well as data management and information.  Although if that’s a stretch too far, then focus on your areas of strength.

Whatever your motivations, we’ll value your contribution and acknowledge your insight and experience.  This is a role which is as much about managing the here and now with your team, as it is about leading our future.  Are you ready to agree your objectives and join this city on the move?  Then, isn’t it time to apply?

Thrive in an environment that promotes diversity and inclusivity, healthy lifestyle choices, wellbeing and balance. We’ll empower you to be the best you can be, with coaching, mentoring and training programmes that meet your professional and personal development needs at every stage of your career with us.

We also offer:

  • Family friendly policies.
  • A range of benefits, including membership of the West Midlands Pension Fund, discounted gym membership and a confidential employee assistance programme.
  • 29 days’ annual leave increasing with length of service, plus the option to purchase additional days.

Please see our microsite for further information and how to apply - https://cityonthemove.co.uk

You must upload a CV and Supporting Statement via the miscellaneous attachment on to your application. This is required for shortlisting; you need to describe how your experience and skills fit the essential criteria for the role as specified in the Person Specification. If you do not attach your Supporting Statement, your application will not be considered.

Closing date 31 August - 12 Noon - Applications will be shortlisted weekly

The Council is a fantastic place to work. You will find an organisation that is both challenging and supportive; with a leadership impatiently adventurous in its pursuit of excellence.

There is a clear vision which is ensuring that the Council is working for communities today and building for tomorrow, we focus our resources on five key priorities:

  • A Prosperous Birmingham: through a focus on inclusive economic growth, tackling unemployment, attracting inward investment, and maximising the benefits of the Commonwealth Games.
  • An Inclusive Birmingham: through a focus on tackling poverty and inequality, empowering citizens, promoting diversity and civic pride, and supporting and enabling all children and young people to thrive.
  • A Safe Birmingham: through a focus on making the city safer, safeguarding vulnerable citizens, increasing affordable housing, and tackling homelessness.
  • A Healthy Birmingham: through a focus on tackling health inequalities, encouraging physical activity and healthy living, supporting mental health, and improving outcomes for adults with disabilities and older people.
  • A Green Birmingham: through a focus on street cleanliness, improving air quality, continuing the route to net zero, and becoming a city of nature.

We see the Council’s role as providing strategic leadership – that’s being able to visualise a new future for the city and equipping others to share our vision. We want to ensure the provision of services for all, so we can support those least able to support themselves by working with partners and putting citizens and neighbourhoods at the heart of our decision-making.

We are always looking for people who put the customer at the centre of their approach, with a commitment to excellence to help us achieve our vision.  We will support you to develop and thrive in your role, building a pathway for long-term success, with lots of development opportunities, such as apprenticeships.

In return, we offer you excellent terms and conditions, generous annual leave, a great pension scheme, well-being support, annual travel passes and discounts at a number of city centre establishments.
