Job Details

The Place Team in Coventry Legal Services is responsible for all planning, highways, and commercial property advice to the Council. The successful candidate will manage a caseload including but not limited to s.106 agreements, providing planning legal and policy advice to planning officers, Councillors, stakeholders and senior officers. In addition, the successful candidate will be required to attend decision making meetings including Planning Committee.

What is the job role?

The Place team is looking for a qualified and experienced Lawyer to join it as soon as possible. If successful, you will be part of a friendly and supportive team that deals with drafting and negotiating s106 agreements, providing a range of advice on planning legislation to various officers within the Council as well as Councillors, providing planning policy advice to planning officers, CLEUD Applications, Tree Preservation Orders, Planning Performance Agreements, Compulsory Purchase Orders and acting as the legal advisor to Planning Committee. Your role will be to work closely with our existing Planning Lawyer to manage a varied caseload of planning cases and provide ad-hoc advice effectively, and to provide a quality legal service to our client department.

You must have the ability to deal with a demanding caseload, with excellent client care skills, and an eagerness to provide a high-quality service to our clients and local community. You will be self – motivated and organised with a track record of meeting strict deadlines and timescales.

When applying for this role you will be asked to write a personal statement, when writing your personal statement please include/ demonstrate the following:

  • An experienced Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive (Fellow).
  • Understanding of the law relating to Planning and experience of successfully managing a busy planning caseload.
  • Dealing with s106 planning and associated agreements.
  • Experience of working with elected members and senior officers, including attendance at, and advising planning committee and other relevant meetings.
  • Understanding of the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015 (as amended) and the ability to provide comprehensive advice to planning officers in relation to the interpretation of the Order.
  • Knowledge of the legislation on Compulsory Purchase Orders and the ability to draft the associated documentation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of local government and administrative law.
