Fixed Term Contract - 24 months 

The City of Wolverhampton Council is looking for an Apprentice to support the work and services of our Health and Safety Team. The H&S team work together to provide advice to others on how to work safely without harming themselves or others. So, if you want to be part of making this difference and you are a committed and enthusiastic individual looking for a rewarding challenge we want to hear from you! This is an exciting role where you will join a friendly and supportive team within a forward-thinking authority planning to meet the key challenges for local government in the coming years.

With support and mentoring from the City Council’s health and safety team, you will assist in carrying out a range of duties and will help provide H&S support across all Council services. One day you could be providing H&S support to elected members, Wolverhampton Homes and WV Living, the next day you could be assisting with an accident investigation within a school and advising on the statutory health, safety and environmental requirements to enable them to operate safely. This is a varied role and you will have plenty of opportunity to make a positive contribution to the team outcomes and be given every opportunity to make full use of your skills as they develop and to influence how our work is carried out.

The work of the health and safety team is a necessary business-critical role which comes with a far-reaching remit and excellent commitment and support from the organisation’s senior leaders. Working with the existing health and safety team made up of experienced and professionally qualified health and safety practitioners, you will be proactively involved with the team’s operational delivery. You will have the opportunity to assist with the development of strategy, advising and supporting the organisation with competent and pragmatic advice and support to a wide range of employees at all levels in both the City Council and partner organisations in line with legal requirements, approved codes of practice and sector specific guidance and best practice. You should be a team player and have the ability to forge good working relationships with internal staff and external agencies. As an active member of the Health and Safety Team and the support of colleagues you will also contribute on behalf of the service to progression of the wider Council Plan, Our City: Our Plan | City Of Wolverhampton Council

The successful apprentice will receive on the job training and will complete a Level 3 Safety, Health and Environment Technician apprenticeship standard - Safety, health and environment technician / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education

You will be fully supported by experienced staff who can assist you with your work and study to give you the experience required to be successful within the role. You will also be trained to use various IT systems that support the efficient delivery of our services.
