Introduction from Ali Layne-Smith, Director of People & Organisation Development

Thank you for your interest in joining the People & Organisation Development directorate here at West Midlands Police (WMP).

I’ve recently joined WMP as I am excited by the unique opportunity of creating and delivering a people strategy that will enable the Force to meet its goals for 2020 and beyond. We’ve made a start and there’s much more to do so we are looking for people with a range of business partnering and specialist skills to augment our existing team of 400.

As an enabling function our role is to provide support, guidance, development and challenge to our employees and their leaders so together we prevent crime, protect the public and help those in need. A focus on the wonderfully diverse West Midlands community we serve is at the heart of what we do and combined with our People Deal commitment to our employees, and the Leadership Promise outlining our expectations of leaders, the foundations are in place for the next stage in our transformation programme.

If you have the passion, drive, skills, experience, resilience, and character required we would be delighted to hear from you.

Ali Layne-Smith
Director of People & Organisation Development

Head of Diversity and Inclusion

Are you recognised nationally as being a thought leader in inclusion & diversity?

Have you transformed the culture of an organisation through increasing inclusivity?

Do you have experience of delivering inclusion and diversity initiatives in the private sector?

Be the force behind our people.

A thought-leader in this sector, you’ll be well connected, active on social media and have an established national profile and will lead the development of workforce diversity and inclusion strategy. You’ll support and oversee improved equality throughout the workplace – encouraging the integration of initiatives in the force. The role will also see you managing all interdependences across the People and Organisation Development portfolio and more widely inclusion issues relating to policing as our recognised expert in this field. You’ll also have the chance to lead and develop two members of staff in newly created roles, but your influence will be felt across the Force.

With a strong presence and outstanding interpersonal skills, you’ll naturally inspire confidence and instil trust. And committed to achieving the best results, you’ll be comfortable challenging senior leaders. To join us, you’ll need a proven background developing a diversity and inclusion function in a large organisation. And, importantly, you’ll be creative, collaborative and adaptable. Ideally, your expertise will be supported by your membership, ideally as a Fellow of the CIPD and other relevant qualifications.

Here at West Midlands Police, we serve almost 2.8 million people – making us the second largest police force in England. We’re planning to radically overhaul all aspects of the business with WMP2020 - a modernisation plan that’ll change the way the force operates. As part of this, we’re bringing together our services to create the People and Organisation Development function. With expertise, commitment and dedication, you’ll thrive in this senior role and help to realise our ambitions.

Closing date: Midnight Friday 2 June 2017.

 Diversity and Inclusion Vision:

“Maximise the potential of people from all backgrounds through a culture of fairness and inclusion to deliver the best service for our communities”
