Engineering Opportunities at Warwickshire County Council – EN001B

Engineering Design Services, Warwickshire County Council (WCC) is a civil engineering business unit within the Local Authority. The core business is comprised of the design and construction of new highway improvement schemes. 

This year WCC are aiming to appoint two new Graduate Engineers. The proposed posts will be in the Highways Capital Delivery and Bridge & Structural Design teams. 

The Highways Capital Delivery team in Engineering Design Services comprises new and experienced engineers dedicated to project delivery at both the design and construction phase.  Its aim is to improve safety, tackle congestion and enhance travel opportunities in the county. Projects include new link roads, junction improvements, cycle schemes, traffic safety schemes and town centre regeneration schemes.

The Bridge and Structural Design Team are responsible for the technical design of new highway structures often working as part of large integrated teams including a wide range of engineering disciplines. Projects range from new highway and drainage infrastructure to the improvement or replacement of existing structural assets which are close to end of life or require a change in use.

As a graduate civil engineer at Warwickshire County Council, you will be joining our diverse engineering team, assisting other Engineers in the delivery of projects ranging from small highway improvement schemes to multi-million-pound infrastructure projects.

Typically, the day-to-day work for the successful candidates can involve any stage of a project including the production of feasibility studies for new schemes; the technical design of new highways and structures using a broad range of techniques including advanced structural modelling software and calculations; communicating and liaising with a wide range of stakeholders and members of the public; preparing and tendering construction contracts including drawings, specifications, and contract documents; construction site supervision and contract administration.

Applicants will need to hold a valid UK or EU passport or visa to work in the UK.

It is preferable if applicants hold a full UK driving license or intend to acquire one in the near future, as sites are located across Warwickshire.

If you hold an Bachelors level Degree in Civil Engineering or related subject please ensure you apply for the EN001A role.

Starting salary £29,429 pa, with clear progression set out in our Graduate Programme.

Skills and Experience

We need engineers who:

  • Can solve a variety of complex problems, both technical and non-technical
  • Are great communicators, with the ability to engage with a range of audiences
  • Are well-organised, with the ability to manage and maintain all types of project documentation.
  • Have experience of using ICT including relevant Engineering/Transport Planning Systems e.g CAD

As a new Graduate Engineer, it is not necessary for you to have practical experience of working on Civil Engineering projects but candidates who have this background may find it to their advantage. Ideally you will be completing an ICE accredited BEng or MEng course and will have studied modules applicable to the type of work undertaken by Warwickshire County Council.

For new civil engineers, we provide a comprehensive training package and on the job training in addition to training courses, supported by our accredited Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) training programme. All graduates are encouraged to join this programme to help them to achieve professional status as an Incorporated or Chartered Civil Engineer and Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Registration and Subscription fees are paid by Warwickshire County Council.


The role advertised will be a mixture of remote working and in Warwick Town Centre at the County Council’s main office complex, Shire Hall. Throughout the role there will be opportunities to visit project sites which are predominantly located in Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull.
