The newly created role of Ecology Officer within the Planning Service presents an exciting opportunity to play a critical part in ensuring net gain contributes to the recovery of nature and brings meaningful and long terms benefits to Sandwell’s biodiversity.
The post holder will shape policy and drive the delivery of biodiversity net gain in Sandwell by working with the planning officers in their preparation for biodiversity net gain, through the planning application process and the implementation of Biodiversity and Nature Conservation polies within with the emerging Sandwell Development Plan.
The post holder will assist in developing a consistent and joined up approach within the Borough that meets the requirements of the Environment Act, whilst addressing the local challenges to its implementation. The post will also play a key role in securing offsite delivery options, particularly within identified greenfield sites with the Borough.
The post holder will deliver their work with the support and guidance of the planning team, delivering strategic work for the protection, restoration and enhancement of the county’s wildlife and habitats.
The successful candidate will understand the potential this policy offers nature recovery and will have the vision and skills to work with partners to deliver this. The role offers a great opportunity for professional development, leading on a new and developing policy area.
- A degree in a relevant subject. Membership of an appropriate professional body.

The council operates hybrid working. This involves working from an agreed workplace location in the borough for at least two days a week.
