Sandwell is one of the fastest-growing areas of the country, ‘the gateway between the Black Country and Birmingham’, and the West Midlands’ second biggest council area.
Sandwell has been under Government intervention since March 2022 and really good progress has been made; governance has been strengthened, scrutiny overhauled, new values and behaviours established and a culture of continuous improvement is beginning to take hold.
A clear sign of the council’s turnaround can be seen in the level of Government regeneration funds that have been successfully secured. Around £127m is now being used to deliver a variety of projects which is evidence of the confidence and trust Government officials have in Sandwell.
Sandwell are in a place where it’s about reset and renewal, a lot of hard work has gone into resetting the organisation and we’re now thinking about how we move forward to tackle the challenges we will face over the next three to five years: how we are redesigning our organisation to be fit for purpose, and how we connect with citizens against a backdrop of financial pressures and increasing expectations.
Reporting to Shokat Lal, Chief Executive who joined in February 2023, this role along with two other new Executive Directors are part of the ‘new story for Sandwell’ and the ambition and possibilities are endless.

The council operates hybrid working. This involves working from an agreed workplace location in the borough for at least two days a week.
