Tamworth Borough Council is an organisation which has a one team approach to the delivery of its services. The Environmental Health service is an integral part of the organisation ensuring the safety of residents/visitors and helping businesses meet their legal obligations through effective regulation.

Tamworth itself is a large market town located in the southeast corner of Staffordshire. With a population of approximately 77,000 the town centre is the hub and focal point for the town providing a range of hospitality and retail services as well as a historic market.

We require an enthusiastic and highly motivated Food Safety Officer to join our busy service dealing primarily with carrying out food hygiene inspections to help the team to catch up following the pandemic. You will need a thorough knowledge of food hygiene legislation, be prepared to think on your feet and be up for a challenge.  You will be given considerable responsibility and will enjoy a varied and challenging case load with the freedom to lead on various projects.

You will need an attention to detail, be motivated to provide a high level of customer service and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.   You will need to be confident in presenting information to various audiences including Committees, hearings and court hearings.  Within a small team it is essential that you have the ability to develop good working relationships with colleagues and be able to work well both within a team and on your own initiative.

You must have a good understanding of current environmental health issues and be committed to collaborative working and finding new solutions to developments in legislation and industry guidance. You must have a flexible approach to work and be able to work well under pressure, manage your own workload and prioritise your working week to meet deadlines.

For the Food Safety Officer position, you must have a minimum of:

  • Ordinary Certificate in Food Premises Inspection awarded by the EHRB, IFST or SFSORB (or equivalent)

Or ideally:

  • Higher Certificate in Food Premises Inspection awarded by the EHRB, IFST or the SFSORB (or equivalent)

You will also need to meet the competency framework of the Food Law Code of Practice such that it allows you to carry out food hygiene inspections.

This is a hybrid working contract, there is a requirement for some of duties to be carried out at home and some on site. Site attendance will constitute more than 40% of available working time.

The authority offers an excellent employment package with flexible working, a non-contributory health scheme, Local Government pension scheme and generous holiday entitlement.

Appointment will be subject to satisfactory references, right to work in the UK check, and medical clearance.
