Job Title: Commercial Manager

Salary: £55,000.00 - £65,000.00

Base: BEP Offices

Role Purpose

The purpose of the role of Commercial Manager is to;

  • Understand the ongoing drivers and needs of the focus market sectors relevant to the expertise and relevancy of BEP, and articulate a strategy for BEP to deliver against these
  • Work with and lead the Client Engagement Leads to design commercially sustainable products and services (working with the technical experts) that deliver the strategy
  • Work with and influence internal stakeholders to recognise the benefit of a commercial approach, and to take responsibility or to oversee the design of products and services best able to achieve them
  • Take direct responsibility for and oversee the CEL’s ownership of client relationships at either an individual or market sector level
  • Identify new opportunities for sustainable commercial outcomes, and to take a lead in delivering the best outcomes from these opportunities including all commercial negotiations to achieve best value
  • Develop income and cost budgets at a market sector level taking into consideration the strategy and relevant products and services, and translate these into Service Area revenue and cost budgets working with the Business Manager and finance team
  • Intelligently influence, manage and direct resources for the delivery of commercial opportunities, including external resources, with effective programme and budget management
  • Monitor and report income and cost performance on a monthly basis against budget and any subsequent reforecasts for each market sector

Reporting to BEP’s Deputy CEO, this role will be largely autonomous working with and influencing colleagues across the organisation and wider stakeholders to deliver market sector and commercial outcomes. 

A positive, self-starting individual will thrive in this role. Measured by the success of the commercial outcomes, the role is flexible, providing the person with autonomy to make well informed decisions and pursue opportunity that will achieve the best outcomes for BEP and the young people in Birmingham.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Articulate a market sector strategy(ies) for each focus market sector, including their main drivers and needs relevant to the expertise of BEP
  • Contribute to the review and refresh any organisational strategy on at least an annual basis, to ensure alignment with broader BEP policy and strategic objectives
  • Proactively work across organisational boundaries to support, influence and advise Directors, SLT, product and service leads, CELs, and their teams to identify, design and implement products, services and commercial opportunities to deliver the sector strategy(ies) and generate profitable income for BEP
  • Lead, coach and mentor the CELs team (and in due course any Market Sector Leads) in the delivery of their corporate and individual objectives, including on matters relating to influencing positive outcomes, client relationship management, and achieving commercial objectives
  • Take direct responsibility for and oversee the CEL’s ownership of client relationships at either an individual or market sector level
  • Identify, plan and deliver commercial initiatives across the organisation, leading, influencing and instructing internal and external stakeholders as necessary to deliver successful opportunity outcomes
  • Identify and implement opportunities for working inter-department or inter-organisation to the extent that better social and commercial outcomes can be achieved
  • Proactively direct and/or manage activities and initiatives to deliver the commercial objectives
  • Lead commercial negotiations, and/or support the CELs with their negotiations and agreements to deliver the commercial opportunities, working within the necessary BEP governance arrangements
  • Set, manage and report on budgets at any level with BEP, working with the Business Manager and finance team
  • Proactively identify and act on commercial opportunities to optimise the financial position of BEP whilst remaining cognisant of the primary, social role of BEP in improving outcomes for young people in Birmingham
  • Work with BEPs MarComs team to ensure commercial opportunities are successfully delivered without jeopardising BEPs brand and identity, and to promote the successes of BEP accordingly
  • Support the reporting of performance, both quantitative and qualitative, to capture achievement of commercial benefit and identify future opportunity
  • Work strategically with BEP stakeholders and external partners to build, maintain and promote effective working relationships within the wider context of education in Birmingham and any wider commercial benefit
  • Making informed and consistent business focussed decisions and presenting a compelling rationale for the chosen options
  • Communicate clearly with the range of stakeholders the opportunity for commercial gain and the rationale for doing so
  • Any other duties and responsibilities reasonably required from time to time

The post holder must:

  • To ensure they are aware of the signs that may suggest a child or vulnerable adult is being abused or neglected

Duties which include processing of any personal data must be undertaken within the corporate data protection guidelines

Person Specification         

Knowledge:

Excellent working knowledge of business and marketing principles, and of obtaining income from commercial ventures

An understanding of local government, education, and health sectors, and their services it provides.

A degree of political awareness, the role of key stakeholders, and the policy context and challenges facing local government, education services and health sector at national and local level.

Knowledge of equal opportunities and diversity

Skills and Abilities:

Educated to degree level or relevant equivalent and evidence of further study and/or additional qualifications desirable and especially in business leadership

Senior commercial professional who can think strategically and operate under pressure

Ability to develop products and services from scratch and develop existing products and services for commercial gain

Results orientated with proven track record of success, demonstrating both use of insight and creative thinking

An ability to manage complex projects 

Strong relationship management

Ability to build and maintain critical working relationships at all levels

Proven negotiating, mentoring and coaching, & strong influencing skills

Ability to self-manage, to enable workload organisation, prioritisation and implementation

Able to manage financial and overall performance

Able to manage multiple deadlines and conflicting demands

Outstanding communication skills, including report writing and ability to communicate complex information simply

Ability to work across organisational boundaries to achieve objectives

Ability to challenge assumptions

Able to operate in, and in some cases lead multidisciplinary team environments

Experience:

Significant commercial experience

Senior management experience

Experience of working in and navigating complex multi stakeholder environments using a collaborative and professional approach

Experience of commercial negotiation 

Experience of building and managing a high performing team

Experience of building strong strategic relationships

Proven & demonstrable track record of working in commercial environment to develop and grow the business

Educational:

Preferably a Degree or relevant equivalent
