Job Description: Class Teacher with subject lead experience and an interest in Humanities (Geography, Religious Education and History)

GRADE: Teacher main scale or upper pay scale depending on experience plus TLR2 (open to both primary and secondary experience).

Reports to: Senior Leadership Team (SLT)

Start date: September 2024

The Humanities Lead will be responsible for ensuring a high-quality Humanities Curriculum for all pupils. They'll make sure every student does well in Humanities through strong leadership and by setting a good example in the classroom. Additionally, they'll work to ensure that our Humanities curriculum for KS3, KS4, and KS5 across the different curriculum pathways, prepares our students effectively for life after Regency.

Key responsibilities

The specific responsibilities for this role will be tailored to the school's needs, but it is expected that you will:

  • Develop a Humanities Curriculum that meets the needs of students across a range of abilities, from lower to higher levels of cognitive abilities and different curriculum implementation strategies.
  • Have a good understanding of the school's context to ensure the curriculum is suitable for all students.
  • Create long-term plans for Humanities to be shared with school teachers.
  • Set a strong example of teaching excellence in your own classroom.
  • Provide feedback and coaching to other staff members.
  • Assess and evaluate the quality of Humanities teaching.
  • Support with the organisation of both electronic and physical resources, coordinating with senior leadership and class staff.
  • Play an active role in planning special curriculum events.
  • Lead assemblies relevant to the Humanities Curriculum
  • Review and revise the curriculum as needed.
  • Support teachers with medium and day-to-day planning.
  • Continuously assess, evaluate, and improve all areas of responsibility.
  • Effectively utilise data analysis (national, local, school, and inspection data) to inform policies, teaching strategies, and overall school improvement.
  • Develop and assess a humanities action plan, evaluating its effectiveness on a half-termly basis.
  • Provide guidance and information to staff regarding assessment, recording, and reporting procedures.
  • Collaborate with other departments to the ongoing development of the school curriculum and to promote cross curriculum links.
  • Assist the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) in monitoring and evaluating the quality of learning through observations, and reviews of lesson plans, work, and teaching strategies as appropriate.


  • Understand and comply with the policies, objectives, and mission of the school, and assist in developing and implementing new policies and practices.
  • Undertake such other duties as may reasonably be required of you commensurate with your general level of responsibility.

The minimum requirements for the Subject Leader for Humanities role are:

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Humanities, Education, etc.).
  • Qualified Teacher
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching Humanities subjects.
  • Strong knowledge of curriculum development and planning.
  • Leadership skills and experience in a similar role (preferred but not mandatory).
  • Familiarity with the specific needs and context of the school.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to assess, evaluate, and improve teaching practices and curriculum.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and using it to inform policies and improvements.
  • Knowledge of assessment, recording, and reporting procedures.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and learning.
