Salary: G10 £42,403 - £47,420 per annum.
Contract: Permanent
Working pattern: 37 hours per week, 5 days per week (working outside of office hours may be required)

The Metropolitan Borough of Walsall is an historic area located within the West Midlands. Reporting to the Customer Engagement Manager within the Customer Engagement Directorate, the Benefits Technical Lead will manage staff and performance, and be responsible for productivity and accuracy across a team of Benefits Officers. Having significant experience in a Housing Benefits, Council Tax Reduction and Discretionary Housing Payments environment, you will play a lead role in maximisation of subsidy and development of channel shift. Knowledge of Universal Credit and other legacy benefits is also essential. Your role will include:
  • Empowering staff to make the correct decision according to legislation
  • Supporting the Benefits Management Team technically using the NEC suite and Digital 360 Document Management system
  • Removing failure and waste to drive service improvement
  • Providing excellent customer service to vulnerable customers
  • Communicating with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including site visits and casework

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and highly motivated with excellent communication and management skills and a proven track record of success in a Housing Benefit arena. They will have experience interpreting and analysing complex data to make decisions that will support financial savings and maximise subsidy. The successful candidate will have a desire for continuing professional development and evidence of working with others to drive service improvement.

We currently operate a hybrid working model. This role presents opportunities for flexible (remote) working and in-person collaboration.

Our team’s core hours are as follows:
  • Monday to Thursday 8.45am to 5.15pm
  • Friday 8.45am to 4.45pm
  • Work outside core hours will be inevitable from time to time.

For this role the successful candidate must undergo a Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check. BPSS is the minimum standard to ensure the identify and integrity of an employee who has access to official information using secure networks linking central governments and local authorities. A BPSS check involves four main elements; Identity Check, National and Immigration Status, Employment History (last 3 years) and Verification of Criminal Record (unspent convictions only).
