Grade 6
£27,668 to £31,601 (pro-rata)
18.5 Hours Per Week

Fixed Term Contract for 5 Months

We are seeking a Welfare Rights Officer to work part-time within our Specialist Support Team. This team provides high quality training, information and advice to local groups and organisations surrounding benefits, tax credits and welfare reform designed to enable them to assist people living within Wolverhampton establish their benefit and tax credit rights.

You will:

•work in partnership with the Council’s Revenues and Benefits and other organisations and be responsible for promoting information on the Benefit Cap in Wolverhampton and addressing the impact it has on local residents
•design, produce and deliver ‘Benefit Cap’ training and briefings sessions to staff within City of Wolverhampton Council and local groups and organisations
•contact and work directly with those affected by the Benefit Cap examining exemption rights and other options for reliving the impact of the Benefit Cap
•work with the council’s Revenues and Benefits to compile information and present claims for Discretionary Housing Payments
•be expected to undertake appeals work, in particular, in the areas of child Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance.

You should:

•be committed to the rights of benefit claimants and to helping the Council meet its responsibility to benefit claimants
•have recent experience of high quality advice in Social Security law and practice
•have excellent communication and negotiation skills
•have the ability to design, produce and deliver effective information to a wide audience including benefit claimants and professionals.
